Am I Being too Picky?

Last week I went on an eBay shopping spree. Today I received about 15 different coin packages in the mail from my shopping spree. I'd say about 11 coins out of the 15 I bought, were uglier than the images. Most had spots, nicks, scratches not shown in the images or hidden by the light reflection etc.

About half were raw and half were graded. Coins ranged in price from about $20 - $100, so some not worth returning.

It seems like more and more I keep running into this issue. So, going forward, I will need to be extra careful on what I buy.

Has anyone else had similar experiences lately?

Thanks

You're not being too picky. If anything you're not being picky enough during your bidding/buying.

Agree. Be far, far pickier in your bidding targets, and you'll return far fewer coins. What kinds of coins are you collecting?

Unless I can tell it is a rare variety I might be able to cherry-pick, if the picks aren't clear and focused, I don't bid. Saves a lot of sending items back, and getting that reputation isn't a good thing.

  • Hi @abcde12345,

I bought different coins. Indian Cent, Lincoln Cents, Jefferson Nickel a Roosevelt Dime and few varieties.

But I agree with others comments. I need to be more picky on the images and if the images aren't good enough, I should ask for better ones or just don't buy the coin to avoid having to return them.

    Thanks

It took me awhile to learn this neat lesson: Instead of buying a bunch of coins, spent that money purchasing one or two really neat ones you especially like. That way you don't have an album of sorta average looking Roosevelt dimes and Indian pennies, but instead a coin or two you are then proud enough to share with others. It's a better feeling and the cost is the same.

Based on your post, you need to become far more 'picky'....buying on ebay can be tricky....lousy pictures, fake descriptions....A lot of trash there. Cheers, RickO

Knowledgeable and picky should go hand-in-hand.

It is similar to someone with all the smarts but no common sense.

You need to be picky about the quality of photo and the coin quality that you are buying. Compare your recent coins purchased to sellers photos, so you can understand what you are seeing in photo compared to coin in hand. When buying from photo, you are always going to have some surprises some good and some bad. If I get a coin and I feel the seller's photo was deceptive, I return the coin.

I buy ten of thousands of coins on ebay.

I think I have returned about 4 coins in 19 years on ebay.

    Know what you are buying.

I'm not the judge of your pickiness, but I am picky.

I thnk that you ar not picky enough when comes to picking that items upon which you place bids.

If I don't care for the coin in the picture, I don't bid on it. If the picture is too poor to see enough about the coin, I don't bid on it. I am picky on the front end of the process. As a result I might have one return a year, and for me that would actually be alot.

I think part of satisfying the desire to buy something is the self control and the pause that I give myself to not buy based on common sense. This has saved me money and I didn't end up with an undesirable coin. I don't always catch myself but when it happens it's a good thing. Peace Roy
