My Pretty 1950 Proof Set NewP- Lots of Photos!

I got this at one of the local B&M's today on the cheap. It was housed in a really old Capital Plastics type holder. Once freed from there, several of the coins would up being beautiful, especially the toned reverses of the dime and quarter. I think the lack of screws in the center might have allowed more air into the holder where those coins were located. None have particularly deep mirrors, but are mostly mark and hairline free, except for the dime obverse which is spotted. Enjoy!

Very nice set. I love the satin pieces. Too bad about the spots on the dime.
Interesting about the reverse toning. Even the cent has it.
Makes you wonder how/where the back of the Capital was stored/exposed to.

The enlarged shots seem to show some scratches... are they on the plastic? Cheers, RickO
Unfortunately, the mirrors aren't deep enough, but I still like the look.
There are some hairlines (The base of Franklin's bust, for example) in a few places, and some are lint or toning streaks- nothing major. The one at Lincoln's neck is actually lint.
depth of mirrors is not taken into account, just 'frost'
these are not business strike Morgans
(but you have coins in hand and pictures can sometimes make things look different than are)
The nickel has a shot if that's the case- it has contrast on both sides.
The golden tone of the Half is very pretty and your photographic skill is way above average
I have been wanting a 1950 Proof set for awhile. You made a great score with this one. Right time, right place, right price. When that happens you have to pull the trigger....an opportunity like this rarely comes around and surely would be gone if you hesitated.
Thank you! The satin finish made it a LOT easier. I'll probably re-shoot a couple of them, like the quarter obverse, because I got the exposure wrong...
NICE set
I bought a 1950 quarter at a Las Vegas show in the late '80s. It looked odd, but it was only $12. Sent it in to PCGS and it came back PR65. That was when I knew I was in love. I am a sucker for matte proofs, but the satins are just as pretty. The "Uncirculated" coins the mint puts out now with commemoratives have a similar look, but a bit too grainy.

Nice looking set! Good toning patterns on the Washie and Roosie, and nice cameo frost on the nickel (and possibly the Washie too).

I bought a set like that, in a Capital Holder, decades ago. 1950 was the year that I was born.
I need to very strongly disagree with this comment. It takes both for a proof to receive a CAM or DCAM designation. I don't disagree that the nickel and quarter have a small shot at a CAM designation, but there ain't no way either would get a DCAM.

I was just going by the PCGS grading standards book. Although I can see frost breaks in the recesses of both, I have also seen pictures of worse in DCAM slabs, so I guess it depends on the day.
I like the look of all of the coins. Very nice set.
The nickel is my favorite. The obverse frost on the bust of TJ is off the charts thick.
What's the price differential on Satin Proof to Brilliant Proof for the 1950's ??
Personally, I prefer the brilliant over satin , because the satin look ms.

That's just the nature of 1950 proofs. The mirrors aren't super deep, especially on halves and quarters, even though they may still have some cameo contrast.
