Is anything more variable than the $5 Indians in 63,64,65?

Man, I'd like to know what if there is.
At least the PICTURES are confusing as hell as to what the TPGs consider a quality grade.

In these grades the fields become a major consideration. Ive never been able to grade the fields on these by images. Also the die state can affect the texture of the fields so, Ive always needed to grade these in hand, even the 61-62 grades. I have a 14-S in a 61 holder but looks a nice or better than some 62's. Till I saw some more 62's in hand.

Before I really understood how these coins wore, I would grade many 60-62 pieces as AU. Only to find out that I was grading these way off track and that the wing wear was far less important and what I should have been looking at more closely we're the fields. This piece is in an old green pcgs holder MS61.

I see the same issue with the $2.5 coins also, have been looking for a particular date for awhile now and finding the grades to be confusing.

The $5 Indian being my favorite coin, I have spent many hours studying the grading of these. And still I become wrapped up in the detail of the incuse design and tend to forget the fields... It seems to be a function of the design... it draws your eyes in...as opposed to normally struck coins with the raised design, where the fields are the focus. Strange... Cheers, RickO

I've studied them to some extent since getting my first example recently, and like they say, luster is a lot of the grade, bag marks also. I love them in MS!

Nice 14-S, Jinx86. Strong mint mark to top it off. A keeper.

Ricko: one of my favorites also. I have gotten 16 63's and 64's in the last three years, and even with the lower prices on most over say five years ago, they are getting expensive! This series along with Walkers is one I may attempt to complete when I sell off some others.

That sounds like a very pretty collection!

Thanks ricko, it is indeed, though it probably isn't difficult to figure what the eight I am lacking are!
