CRO's View of the Archangel Collection

coinraritiesonline.com/index.php?page=mkt&id=361
"Don’t look now, but CRO is about to recap Stack’s-Bowers’ recently concluded sale of the “Archangel Collection”, an interesting, mostly high-end, well-pedigreed and loooong off the market offering of colonial type coins and pre-mint patterns assembled by an astute collector in a concentrated period between 1972 and 1984, privately and in significant auctions of the time, and then apparently left undisturbed and never upgraded, added to or otherwise improved for a generation."

Well written John! Having viewed the lots I enjoyed your commentary even more.

Coins are so much more fun when prices are all over the place!

I like and agree with that sentiment. I never wanted to collect commodities!
He was dead wrong on the Silver Libertas. I bought it, and it is a MS62+ now and now resides in a major collection w/a Bronze Libertas
I also bought the J-10 which was a nice coin and sold too darn cheap. We think the AU55 In FUN will go for the same amount.
Otherwise, great report
Great write up--enjoyable reading.
Liked the analytical write up..........
Very interesting... and the pictures, along with the commentary, make it an excellent read. Cheers, RickO
love those type of reports and thanks for posting the link!
Thanks for the link. Interesting to read and very informative. In my opinion CRO has one of the best websites out there.
I had just read the report myself before seeing this. Very interesting.
John almost makes me want to collect colonial coppers and I’m a silver guy.
He did mention it was his opinion and we know grading is subjective.
Here's the auction info for the coin.
PCGS Price Guide lists a MS63 at $160,000 so it is inline with that.
Of course you defend your position because you bought it...The beauty of the market is that opinions can vary and for you to be right about a piece for you and your client it doesn't necessarily mean that others are wrong about their valuation... Is a pretty 62+ $40k better than the most expensive 62 previously?

He said it was a beautiful 62 but no better. Good for you in seeting the potential ugrade! How much do you think the "plus" adds to the value? Would it have been a bad deal if it didn't get the "plus"?

To me, this was the "top" coin in the bunch:
"Speaking of superb state coppers, it was tough to top lot #7099, the 1786 Vermont VERMONTENSIUM last offered at the 1976 ANA auction as part of a consignment from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, now graded MS63+ BN by PCGS, which realized $84,000."
