In memory of my father, Steve Merlo, who passed away in 2016. He served and saw combat with the US Army 23rd Infantry in Chu Lai, Da Nang Province from 1969 to 1971, and was there when I was born. He went on to become a well-known outdoors columnist for the Bakersfield Californian newspaper and Bakersfield Tuff magazine.
USMC 89-94. Thanks for the opportunity to enter twice but only entering once.
If I win please donate my prize to 22toomany, VFW, Wounded Warriors or any veterans charity/org of your choice. God knows they need any help they can get because the government certainly forgets once our heroes take the uniform off.
Semper Fi.
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.
U.S.M.C. 1994-2000.
My first name was given to me in honor of my personal hero, my great uncle Russell Goodchild. If you can read the date you'll know it was a very important date in US history.
On the coin side of things. I should get this one back from the sticker factory tomorrow with a green bean
Last weekend I gave a half dollar to the vet at the VFW table outside the supermarket, and I got a little cloth poppy in return.
Served in the in this Unit and most of the time went into action on these but sometimes in and out on these
.
Coins would not survive in that environment.

In memory of my grandfather who was a purple heart recipient in WWII. He was my hero and my best friend. He didn't teach me anything about coins but he influenced every other aspect of my life. I think about and miss him every day.
This says a lot.
A person can't live forever, but the next best thing is to be remembered fondly by those they left behind.
US Army 1963 - 1969 'Grunt'. Happy veterans day everyone.

My dad was a B24 pilot in WWII stationed in Leece, Italy. He was shot down twice out of 32 missions. Not sure if this is wishful thinking but I was told that they dropped many cases of Vienna sausage when bombing Vienna. Here is my dad with two of his B24's and copilots. Ruth Please! was named after my mother. The other two were both 7 dwarves. My dad, 5 uncles and my brother and I all served in the military. All were in combat except me. My brother caused my orders to be cancelled as he was in Viet Nam already. So I got lucky and spent 3 years in Europe, mostly Germany. Here is my patch I wore, sorry its a little dirty. Thanks for the opportunity. I hope all on this forum appreciate the military men and women who gave some, a lot and those that gave all they had.

I assume that sign says Salzburg (Austria), which, when combined with the "Reichsautobahn", presumably put him in Bavaria, possibly near Berchtesgaden, the town at the base of the mountain where Hitler had his mountain home.
I'll bet he had some stories to tell, although many did not share them,
Thank you for your service
And your sacrifice....
And for VN vets, welcome home.
To all the military members, thank you for your service.
If I am picked, please pass the prize along to a veteran member instead!
In memory of my uncle Bill(youngest of 5 brothers who all served in WWII) KIA in action Okinawa 6/8/1945.
Thanks to all my buddies in all the services...………..Have a great veterans day.

I'm not a vet but my wife is she did 20 years in the USN. Thanks for the chance.
Successful Trades: Swampboy,
Awesome giveaway. My father was a veteran. He joined the Army during WWII and was stationed at Arlington VA. He got out just after the war, but then joined the Marines in 1965. He did 2 tours in Vietnam before retirement in 1979. I received an NROTC scholarship after high school and went active over the summers, but I never took my commission. I consider myself a Joy Boy, and not actually a vet even though I have discharge papers. My hats off to those who served.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
You're a good man, 1630Boston
Lot of vets, myself, included here. That's nice to see.
Many were WAY before my time. Others overlapped my time. Sometimes, makes me wonder if some of us were 2 ships passing in the night (ie....might have come across one another at some point, some base, but, due to time and due to screen names, we just don't know it.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Side note:
I had my wisdom teeth out when I was at Ft Lewis during my time in. I was done in the morning and, in the afternoon, was at the gym shooting hoops. I was given laughing gas, not fully knocked out, and it was all "FREE"
Fast forward to, literally, today. My son needs his wisdom teeth removed. They will knock him out. Will only take 45 minutes (today was consultation, day after Christmas he gets it done...we tried to minimize any missing of school or basketball). They said he will be "good" within a few hours and likely can get back to sports (basketball) within 3-5 day, maybe up to a week.
However, the cost, AFTER insurance, will be $3450 to us.
The "free" healthcare in the service was NOT gentle and NOT that good a lot of time, but dang, the cost of things when having to pay out of pocket these days sucks!
Oh yeah....even though the oral surgeon was busy, once he found out I served in the Army, he slowed down to talk a bit....he was in the Army for 12 years himself, as a dentist/oral surgeon.
He got the training, he did his time, he served, and now he is making BANK!

US ARMY 88-96 and 2 years National Guard, 3 Mos's 52Delta, 63Bravo and 44 Echo.
God bless those serving, those who served, and those who gave all.
Bochiman: I too had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time while stationed at Ft. Carson, CO.
I’m not a veteran but thank you to all of the men and women that helped keep our country safe.
Disabled vet here.....explosion and hearing loss. Have lived just fine but a bit quietly!
US Army, 1966-1972. Sent to Germany as an interpreter in the middle of the Vietnam war. Funny thing was that I didn't speak German.....Army made a mistake in my records....worked for me!
Thanks and if I win please just donate to a Vet group locally.

Extremely important date and your Uncle was an extremely important MAN.

A thank you to my father, grandfathers, great grandfathers, and all the other veterans whom have served our country with honor, giving me the chance to collect coins in a great country.

In memory of my grandfather, William Evans, who served in the Army Air Corps and the Air Force from 1943-1974 and flew B-17s, B-47s, and B-29s in the Golden Age of Strategic Air Command. RIP.

USAF Retired — 34 years of active military service! 🇺🇸
Thanks for the giveaway and for honoring our veterans. As my sig line below states, I’ve served in the USAF for over 30 years and am not yet retired, although I’m thinking about it. I’ve enjoyed every year serving our blessed country and wouldn’t change a thing. God bless all those — military and civilians alike — who serve America and protect our freedoms.

I would like to say THANK YOU to all veterans; past, present and future. I was active duty Air Force for 24 years. I once purchased a 1884-S Morgan Dollar from a pay phone on the streets of Utrecht, The Netherlands from a U.S. dealer. The counter on the phone spun like crazy trying to make that purchase in 1990...I misplaced that coin and who knows how many others during one of my moves.

2nd comment since I am a vet. 4 generations. The picture of my dad is with his horse, when he was released from a POW camp in Yugoslavia near Italy. Probably the last US soldiers captured on horseback, and when they were liberated, his was one of the horses that had not been eaten yet.

Happy Veterans Day to all who served and are serving. U.S. Navy, 1959 - 1963, Radioman Second Class (E5)...Lots of ports and lots of adventure (Cuban Missile Crisis - right in the middle, 3 Russian subs around us)....And I can truthfully say, you NEVER want to go through a hurricane at sea....nearly sank....Cheers, RickO
And here she is.... U.S.S,Mills, DER383 Cheers, RickO
Thank you Vets, all of you!
My daughter retired after serving 22 years in the Air National Guard. My granddaughter, her niece, goes to Parris Island in June and so the tradition of proudly serving our flag and country continues in my family.
Here's a photo of my Dad.
Don't know where this shot was taken; Pensacola, San Antonio, Thule Greenland, Ridgewell England...
His 12th and last bombing mission ended abruptly but he survived his long, cold stay in Germany and was liberated by a Russian armored division in May 1945.
My hero.
Thanks for the chance @1630Boston
