early re-engraved nickel GTG
I have been collecting re-engraved stuff ... mostly on Washington quarters and Jefferson nickels. It seems that engravers at the mint have been fooling around for years (it probably gets boring in the die shop). This variety even has a name 'The Bleeder' and is near 150 years old.

I have always wanted a “Bleeder!” I also am a devoted fan of the re-engraved proofs, mostly stick to Jefferson Nickels though. I have picked a few half dollars and Lincolns.

What is the date of this coin, as this is a variety I would like to start searching for.

I am not sure if you should start looking for or not, there are SO many shield nickel varieties, and many are next to impossible to notice in lower grades.
You could have a field day with the Type III gold dollars. Many of them show doubling on the "UNITED STATES OF AMEMRICA" on the obverse.
The apprentice must have worked on that one.

That is interesting... and has it's own name even.... Cheers, RickO
The Contamin lathe would not reproduce tall straight lines. Even the Hill and Janvier couldn't until they drastically lowered the relief. So, the reverse shield lines on Seated and these had to be hand cut. The crossbars probably were low enough on a deuce for the lathe to do them, it could do the obv shield on Seated. The key is if you see any recutting. Whomever was the engraver on this piece was having a bad day. That's about as dramatic as I've seen.
I got grade back, guess what they called it ... (don't look it up)
Genuine scratched.....lol (I hope not)

Graded a MS62. I decided to sell it through GreatCollections because there is some other things I want to buy. It closes Sun, Feb 03, 2019 04:41:12 PM Pacific Time.
Good luck!
