A couple of new cherrypicks. 1956 Proof sets.

Here's a couple of 1956 Proof sets I've picked up over the last couple days. Nothing huge, but I don't mind getting some decent coins for a great value.
Here's the first one. The Washington Quarter just jumped out at me from the dealers case.
Here's the other one. I just picked it up today. Love those Type 1 Franklin's.

That Washington is a beauty! The frost on it is gorgeous!
Outstanding quarter!

Nice.
I thought only SanctionII cherrypicked on those types of sets....
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Yeah, some of his threads have inspired me to keep my eye's open. I don't find really nice DCAM's too often, but when I do find them, I like to bring them home.
The '56 T1 is the second I've picked up this year unattributed. I'll take Type 1's for Type 2 prices anytime. This last one is a bit better than the first and has really strong mirrors. So I will replace the old one with this one.
Wow absolutely stunning / nice find!
Nice pickups - I also like the quarter and the holder it was in.
Most dealers have no clue what a Type 1 Franklin is so they aren't too hard to cherry pick. Trouble is, you still have to find them. I've probably bought 8-10 sets in 25 years.

That 1956 Proof quarter is a stunner. Congratulations on finding it.
I have always like the 1956 Proof set. That year marks my first memory concerning national events. I remember watching Dwight Eisenhower accepting the Republican nomination for presidnet to TV.
Both the Franklin and the Washington are really nice coins...I can definitely see why you acquired those sets....Cheers, RickO
Nice sets, even with tightening standards the quarter may get a cameo.
Nice pick ups. Both the quarter and half dollar are very nice.
I keep looking for a 1956 Type 1 half dollar that is a Cameo. No luck yet.
Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I wish grading proofs was not so difficult from images. I'm curious if you guys think the Washington Quarter would go CAM or possibly DCAM?
I love the thrill of the hunt. I am always on the watch for anything that has a nice cameo look. So far my best luck has been with the Washington Quarters and a couple of 62 Franklins. I want to find a nice frosty '64 Kennedy.
The 1956 is so common in cameo it will probably only go cam. A lovely find though for cheap!
I think your quarter would not receive a DCAM designation.
Take a look at Modcrewman's Avatar. He found that 1956 quarter when he started collecting in this niche area. It received a DCAM designation, deservedly so.
I once cherry picked myself and found a type 1 in my collection
Decided to send it in and came back PR67.

Cool set, I love that quarter. Even the holder is cool.

I'm surprised @Cameonut has only picked 8-10 Type 1 sets over 25 years. I've probably picked 15-20 in my 8 years.
I see your quarter as a CAM given recent grading experience. Since @SanctionII referenced it, here is my 68 DCAM, I found this coin literally the first time I ever looked at proof sets for cameos...it was almost my first non-face value coin purchase.
Modcrewman has the magic touch. He has found multiple fantastic high grade hard to find Cameos and DCAM coins. Many he found shortly after he started collecting in this niche area.
At first he probably thought they were easy to find.
Thank you for the great information. This is not an area that I am focusing on, but I do find interesting. I really love the look of the CAM/DCAM coins, but only in the years where they were not so prevalent, so pre 1960? With that said, I prefer to find them in the wild rather than buying them slabbed. I find the thrill of the hunt far more satisfying. I'm trying to use the 1956 as a bar to judge others I find.
That quarter is insane!!! Your story of finding it reminds me of how I felt when I came across the XF-40 1919 DDO Mercury Dime. I was at a show and had remembered about reading the article on it's discovery. So I decided to look for one, after literally looking at 3 1919 dimes, found one. I thought "Wow, that was easy, there must be a lot out there". Sometimes it's just all about the Universe coming into alignment.
On a similar subject of the CAM/DCAM hunt, I've found myself looking for raw PL/DMPL Morgans. That's another area with standards that seem to be subjective depending on the date/mm. I've found a nice handful that meet the PCGS definition of DMPL, but I have yet to submit any to see if they truly meet their standards. What really matters to me, is that I really love the look of them. It's a fun hobby and I really love hunting for the tough to find coins.
Take a look at the Registry Sets for the 1950-1964 Proofs, including the sets owned by Cameonut and Modcrewman. Very nice eye candy.
I posted a thread last December that has photos of my raw Cameos from 1950 to 1970 (the thread is 4 pages long and has large pictures that take a long time to load). I have hunted for raw examples of these coins for 18+ years. A fun niche area to collect in.
Hi @jtlee321,
The Type 1 1956 Proof is a beauty. It may or may not be a CAM but….
Your photos are great at 2000x1000. At full resolution, there appears to be a “doubling” in the reverse. This could just be the photo or maybe it is “Machine Doubling”. What drew my attention was the tiny divot in the lower bar of the “D” in DOLLAR. In addition, there appear to be notches in the letters of EPU. Please examine this coin under a high power glass or stereoscope. This is what you are looking for:
The above high contrast image is of the EPU of a very rare 1956 Type 1 DDR012 (NGC VP-001) Franklin Half. Your image of the coin seems to show both of the “tells” mentioned above that are consistent with this rare variety. Only a few have ever been attributed. If I am wrong, no harm done, you still have a great coin. Good Luck!
Thanks, I'll check them out. It's kinda funny how your eye tends to evolve as you collect. It wasn't too long ago that I had almost no interest in collecting these things. But now, I really like them. I guess it's what keeps us in the hobby.
I just took a look at the '56 T1, no doubling. Sometimes Proof coins in images can really play tricks on you, they can look like doubling, but there is none. Thanks for the heads up on the DDR, though.
Nice pick! How thick are the letters and numbers on the nickel in the type 1 set (lower pic black holder)
Ddo?

It's not the DDO, I typically check everything. The one coin I did not check was the Franklin.
