The Living legendary BillJones numismatist Alive and Kickin’

I have heard/ seen a few members that I respect mention @BillJones as being extremely knowledgeable and having a superior collection. I always pay attention when he writes and posts photos, usually of amazing items I had not previously considered.
I always want to evolve into a better collector and I attempt this process through osmosis while reading here and in numismatic articles/ books.
So now I want to know all about Bill, the Living Legend, and instead of writing an out of the blue long winded letter to him, I am making this post to hopefully enlighten the rest of us regarding the public side of Legendary Bill Jones, master collector and numismatic educator.
Anyone have an interesting story or something?

I bought a P au55, 58? 1916-D Merc from @BillJones when I first joined the board & I still have it.
For some strange reason I bought 4 more 16-D, au something, 1 from board member @jdimmick
I find all of Bills posts a Jewel to the Forums, I always take the time to read them and look forward to seeing them. I can honestly say there isn't any post that I didn't learn something from, I brew my Coffee at home in the mornings and it's a Hundred Times better that any starbucks coffee if I drink it while reading a Bill Jones Post
Steve
...he definitely has one hell of a Christmas village setup...looking forward to seeing it again this season
I regret that I never knew him when he was an active dealer - I bet he came across, and offered, some great numismatic treasures back in his day.
But I agree - he is a blessing to the forum, for his knowledge and the beautiful examples of coins, medals, etc. that he posts to keep us informed and enlightened.
I have my own opinion about what certain forum member's speaking voices sound like in real life. When I see BillJones reply in a thread, I read his posts(on my own mind) in the voice of former presidential candidate Paul Simon. I am probably WAY off the mark, but we all have our quirks, right? This in no way is meant to be political...I am ONLY talking about voice tone:
Bill Jones has a depth of knowledge and also an ability to communicate facts an information very well. I am always impressed and educated by his post. Hopefully Bill decides to do a few books either as the primary or co-author his experience with many areas of numismatics is quite expansive. One of the reasons I even visit these forums is Bills post. We are indeed fortunate he participates in such an important and quality manner.
I recall briefly discussing the CU coin forum and that troll
Insider2 with Bill at a coin show before he learned I was Insider2. He is a very entertaining and knowledgeable numismatist.
I'm still searching for that list of great collections he built or any treasures he sold
yes, he does educate. he buys NON CAC coins most of the time and loves to tell people why. In his discussions he proved I learned I am stupid for wasting my time all these years hanging around CAC founder John Albanese and dealing in CAC coins.
Bill Jones-Legendary for sure! He humbles me.
@Specialist You are not going to believe this but I was JUST returning to this thread to post "Now I want to know all about LS!"
I certainly enjoy his posts and he has terrific type coins!

I've PMd him a few times to ask his opinions about approaches to Type Set collecting. This is my 3rd time around and I want to get it right this time. Yes, he has an amazing knowledge base, but he also has an exceptional eye and is numismatically wise. Thanks for the direction, Bill!

@Insider2 to be fair, you were quite abrasive when you started posting here(about the same time I started out here too). At least now people know it's because you care.
@specialist that isn't very nice. There are plenty of nice coins out there that aren't anointed by the chosen one.

Yikes! Sorry folks. I edited the title. I also granted the title legend/ legendary, because some that post are like legend or mythical figures to a new comer like myself.

There are a few posters here that have and are willing to share a great deal of numismatic knowledge and Bill is certainly right at the top of that list. I would name a few others, but I don't want to leave anyone out, so I won't. But I'm sure you all know who else is on that list. Thanks to all of you.
He has a wonderful complete, including gold, type set that he spent many decades building.
I know that he loves the hobby, because he takes his time to post interesting and informative threads with great pictures.
I PMed him, once, years ago and he was pleasant and helpful.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

You do have a way of growing on people like a foot fungus. Remeber all the crap I used to give you on CT, especially over your emoji language

You might have to edit “Legend” our since specialist has that name

Abrasive? Abrasive? Try "sarcastic nuclear nightmare
." It's in my nature; especially when confronted with silliness. Why I teased "Mr. Bill" all the time until I met him.
I grew up in a different time than many of you and discussions got pretty rough at a boarding school. I'm trying to be much more gentle with y comments - except for stuff like "net" grading.
I read all of his posts and try to thank him for each one. Great resource, great history lessons.
Clearly, Bill knows his stuff about coins, he has the goods, but when he showed his model railroad Christmas layout, I knew he was a bad arse. ;~
I have looked forward to Bill's posts since being a member here and across the street. If I remember correctly, the first time I read one of his posts was across the street regarding a Thomas Jefferson Peace and Friendship Medal of which I had never been aware of. His posts are always informative and instill the collector's spirit in all who view his precious coins, medals and other paraphernalia.
I thank you Bill for the tomes of learning passed on by your posts and beautiful examples of what I wished I had collected 50 years ago.

I WANT TO SEE IT! WHAT GUAGE? Mr. Bill is suddenly my "bestest" friend.
Enjoy his expert knowledge of history, sports and of course coin collecting. Thank you Bill!
I definitely echo the positive sentiments expressed here about @BillJones. I never skip one of his posts, because I know that they will include great info, insight, and/or pics of fabulous coins. Bill is a treasure to our community. I greatly appreciate that he frequents here and shares his knowledge and experience freely for me to learn from. Thank you Bill!
I also look forward to @billjones posts. Bill posts some of the most interesting and educational info on these boards. Thanks Bill!
I agree, always a pleasure to read bill jones posts, and more importantly, see the coins he posts.
truly nice pieces, honestly, cant ever remember seeing a coin bill posted that I didn't like.
RIP BJ
He isn't dead...
Holly molly ...... I must've miss it big time....... my apology BJ
Life goes ON
I am humbled but what you have all written. I just hope that I can continue to live up to such a high standard. Thank you all!
One of my favorite posters.
A poster child for posters. Always a informative read.
I've always enjoyed his posts and respected his opinion. And his coins, well, they are awesome. What an eye. I still can visualize is 96 quarter from an earlier post. And I had the pleasure of meeting him at FUN a couple of years back. A gentlemen.

For those of us who frequent the Collector's Universe Darkside, Bill's 'Bullet Book' threads provide a panoramic window into the lives and coinage of British monarchs down through the centuries.
Once they're all compiled into a single volume I'll be in line to buy a copy.
Here's a random one....

I had always wanted an Indian Head Gold. I saved up the money to buy one and I was very fortunate that Bill personally looked at one in hand for me. I think it was a heritage auction. I love this piece! Here is the pic I took of it.

Bill has made some extraordinary posts here, historical, educational. I wish I knew how to use the search feature better.
If you have a link to one of his superlative teaching moments please share it.

WHAT about the train layout pictures?
That's too broad. Let's focus on the specific great ones.

Bill is a great collector and mentor for many of us. His love of coins, tokens and medals really comes through in his posts.
He's a great asset to the forums and I'm glad to have him here.
+1
I call for having his statue in front of the ANA headquarters! His accomplishments are so many. Actually what the heck are they?
Well for example, he has helped me examine coins I was interested in on the bourse and explain to me why a certain coin had great surfaces or not - helped me assess value and whether I want to purchase it. OTH, when I walk to certain tables on the bourse, all I get is dirty looks since I don't dress like I am carrying a million bucks in my pocket.
Unselfish and willing to help with no expectation of a return. Thaz Bill.
Best, SH
