This was from my final submission to Pcgs. Guess the grade, I was surprised. Also for a bonus see if you can spot the variety, if any. ;)

It looks like a VLDS of Coneca die 5, FS-021.5.
As for the grade, they have been brutal on my Jefferson submissions lately, so with that in mind, I'll say 65.

    Edited to fix typo

    it is a 1939 reverse of 40

grade ->it is either lightly circulated or cleaned. The AU's I have seen have on the reverse rub and lack of complete details on the dome over the steps and on the obverse darkening and/or lack of hair details. I am going with UNC details - cleaned. The reverse shows parallel lines in the field above and to the left of Monticello. The obverse shows parallel lines in 3 different photos and 3 directions on the bust. I would need to see in hand with loupe to be sure the reverse is not die polish. The rim edges has numerous scrapes which would indicate circulated. From the photos shown, it is a borderline FS which they do not give to AU or details coins.

variety-> it is late die state seen by the erosion in fields near the periphery and letters. This thickens the letters erodes the edges. It does still look like a DDO, but I am going with DDO-001 which would be 'minor variety' if noted.

It’s not cleaned, it made a grade. Here’s a few more close ups.
Hints it did not receive a FS suffix, rightfully so, it’s not in my set either
It was an eBay pick. $40 raw, listed as Gem BU

then AU58 or AU55 (I guess they could have gone low MS)

My grade is MS-61 or 62. Jefferson Nickels are not part of my areas of study or great interest. The obverse was struck with a stressed die that had fatigue marks in the fields. As such this could not have been an extremely high grade coin even if it had not had the many small ticks and hairlines that show in some of the photos.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Pictures are tough to grade from.... I would agree with Bill though.. 61/62....No idea on the variety....I limit my Jefferson's to war nickels... Cheers, RickO

I don't know A_R, I never met a shiny Jeff I didn't like, but Jefferson's face, neck and shoulders look pretty banged up on this one. The difference in your pics vs. the eBay seller's pics adds to my confusion. My guess would be a "better under the grader's light" MS-64. You indicated you were surprised, which means it may of come back MS-65. If so, I'm happy for you, but terribly confused otherwise.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

I was crestfallen, it came back AU58, which I suspected, despite the high raw Gem BU sticker price. I hoped for ms61 or 60.

I was sure it was a LDS ddo fs101 And was willing to accept the misrepresentation. Date doubling and extra thick letters. The sharp horn on the B is not so sharp on every other attributed example, especially the 2 I have seen previously.
No variety and no GEM, I got a lot of “grading is subjective, we have former Pcgs and Ngc graders working here...tube wear” and ultimately the seller did nothing to make the situation right :(
I guess I can start an Everyman type set.

This is the real deal, a ddo I made a few years ago.
