This is one of the better modern commemorative coin designs.
This medal was awarded to those who mounted exhibits at the Columbian Exposition. The obverse was designed by Augustus St. Gaudens and the reverse was by Charles Barber, which made St. Gaudens mad as hell. St. Gaudens had no repsect for the abilities of Charles Barber. So far as St. Gaudens was concerned, the worst thing happened. His work was combined with that of Charles Barber.
The Columbian Expo officials rejected the St. Gaudens reverse because of the depiction of a nude male in the design. They tried to get him to add a fig lief or a strip of ribbon to no avail. The model for the reverse was St. Gaudens' son, Homer.
**Special Thanks to Stacks' for provided the photos on the Internet. I hope that they don't mind me using them here. This is a super rare medal. **
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

No worries. After some searching I found what I believe is the Eglit number Eglit 105.
Nike, or winged victory of Samonthrace is probably my favorite sculpture, and this medal has Nike, with arms and head
Columbus Day always reminds me that I should have gone to Vermont this time of year. In any case, I don't like the revisionist history that is creeping up regarding him. He was wiling to take a risk and sail off into the great unknown.

I sincerely hope that Nene geese are not as overpopulated as the carpy Canada geese. Somewhere I have a duck stamp with a Nene goose on it from a long time ago.
Canada geese are a HUGE problem in North America. Nothing more than protected chit factories.

Columbus Day... a great old holiday - sadly fading now due to - well, never mind. I recall my first Columbian half dollar... got it as a paper boy... thought it was the greatest coin I had ever seen.....really fired my coin fascination. Don't know what ever happened to it... fifty cents was a lot of money back then. Cheers, RickO
Late to the party, but here is some added perspective from today's local newspaper as to how Columbus's discovery of the Americans had a significant impact on the "indigenous peoples" of the Old World, and not just on those in the New World.

No kidding
The reverse is amazing!
I found a few similar and one exactly the same on eBay from $100-350. All kind of rough or have rim dings. It is Known as Eglit 105 (the original medal pictured) but about 10 different searches yielded 4 for sale. Some awesome variations on that medal, slightly different obverse details and one highly ornate.
There were a few others I found with similar obverse and different reverse. A very interesting series of medals.
