Here's my special purchase for the week:
A post-war gold "tola" bullion piece from Calcutta, India (circa 1950). The tola is a traditional Indian and Southeast Asian measure of weight. It equals 11.3398038 grams (exactly 3/8 troy ounce).
Gold coins weren't being made by many governments during the post-war era. But gold was still very desirable in places like India, Pakistan, Nepal, Singapore. So private minters and refiners made their own. They kind of tried to outdo their competitors with interesting and attractive designs. Think of these as some of the forefathers of the Sunshine, Scottsdale, Geiger, etc. that we buy today.
The company that made this piece was caught red-handed receiving smuggled gold, melting it, and turning it into these "laundered" tolas!
Sham Lal Sen Private gold Tola ND (c. 1950) MS64 NGC, KMX-Unl., Fr-1612. AGW 0.3730 oz. A highly lustrous and sharply struck private tola issue, featuring an attractive obverse design that illustrates a leftward running deer with rising sun over mountains in the background. Seldom seen as a type. AGW 0.3730 oz.

Groovy piece Weiss!
I picked up this Drew silver 5 Oz about a week ago. I had been out bid on one about 2 years ago. Couldn’t believe it went for what it did at the time but havnt seen one offered since. Could be the same piece for all I know. I had another chance and went a little harder for it this time. I think it’s just such a perfect piece. The exstruded trapezoid shape it appealing as is the hallmark stamp and lettering. All the attributes I like in a bar all on the same piece. I paid about 60 more dollars than the last auction.
I’ll happily add it to my 10oz and under collectible bar collection.

I believe they were made by: Credit Suisse ..(Essayeur Fondeur) long before before Credit Suisse withdrew from the bullion business and Valcambi was sold, but retained the CHI logo.

Mercury, those gold coins in capsules only - are you buying them as the generic low-cost bullion offerings from Apmex? If so, can you discuss both the quality of the coins received, and whether you get a good variety (in the gold spouses and gold commems in particular), i.e. fewer duplicates?

@ricko It's actually purple, it must be the light under which I shot it. It's just the standard 1986 proof.

Last week's pick up. I traded some unrefined gold scrap of mine for 357.5 oz of silver. Seems like the right move as I think silver has far more to gain than gold at the moment. But damn is this stuff heavy.

Two Tubes of 10, 10 oz bars and 4 tubes of 25, 1 oz rounds. They are not nearly as fun to image in a tube as they are all laid out.
