I sold my entire collection six years ago. I felt, at the time, I had to do it.
I’m a natural collector. I like the history in the coin, not necessarily the monetary value of it, although, that spark of silver sends a twinkle to my eye.
That’s right, I don’t want to collect because of melt value.
It’s been a while.
Honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing now.
I don’t know what to collect now. I’m thinking Barber quarters. A lot of them.
I literally don’t know.

Welcome to the forum. If you attend a local show you will likely get hooked again. careful with pricing as many series have been in serious decline since you sold.
How about 1950-1959 proof Lincoln cent?
I did the same thing 10 years ago. I kept 2 of my special Morgan Dollars and basically a couple dollars face of silver. I came back to coins a few months ago. No idea why, I just missed it a lot. TONS to be learned here. Collect what YOU like and can afford. I went to a show for the first time in a decade last month, had a fantastic time and picked up a couple of nice coins that I plan on having for a long time! Welcome back!

Anyway, I’ve lost my understanding. Just trying to get it back.
The romanticism of collecting is hopefully not lost.
Read the red book again (and again), decide what you like, and don't buy crap ( details coins, etc.)

I love standing liberties. I was thinking better to go older. But standing liberties are my favorites. Just the design. The erratic mintage.

I had an older friend, now 85, who sold a nice foreign/Ancients collection for about $125,000 nine years ago. He soon reinvested about $25,000 in four early U.S. Dollars. Those have been real PITAs to liquidate in his old age!

Welcome! I’m in a similar situation, I stopped collecting about 4 years ago. I kept the coins I had, which was nothing of great value and put them all away. In June I decided to start back up again. Currently I’m still trying to narrow down my focus, it changes weekly, but for me, I’m mainly doing a Lincoln Cent Dansco album, 7070 typeset album, and am playing with slabbed toned Lincoln Cents. That gives me just enough variety that I can usually find something to purchase each week, even if it’s just buying a few penny rolls from the bank to take home and explore for my album!
The Box of 20 is a great idea. I’m going to do a $150 and below toned Lincoln set!

Oh, and ...if you can... start with the tough ones.
I’ve gravitated to type collecting, but 18th & early 19th century coins (currently) hold the most interest for me. I’m better able to tolerate & enjoy coins in lower grades and that makes the pursuit more fun. The crudeness and relative scarcity of these issues are also pretty intriguing.
Since you like history, why don’t you give a type set a try? A Barber Quarter set would limit you to only the 1892 - 1916 time period, and there are some wicked expensive coins in it like the 1901-S.

You could also drive yourself crazy and become a "Buffnik", which is the modern day usage for a "Beatnik".
Buffalo Nickel collecting is not for everyone. Sanity is overrated anyway.

Assuming the budget allows it, try collecting one series like a rich man, registry style, in slabs, and everything else raw and like you’re on a very tight budget. And I do mean “everything”. I’ve actually never met anyone who did that, but it’s a great solution to the “quantity vs quality” conundrum.

Take your time deciding and then take your time collecting to have fun.
Of course time flies even when you're not having fun but that's another issue altogether.
Here's an idea that a few have mention - a Dansco 7070 type set but with all first or last year issue!
I just recently sold off my collection in order to build a house. I have no regrets but can't wait to get back in the game. Figure it will happen about a year from now. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing the box of 20 concept again.
Welcome back. I'd go to a local show and listen to your heart. See which series draws you in naturally. Then educate your mind on that series. Collecting that series will then be incredibly rewarding, even if not from a financial standpoint. Collectors collect and they collect what they love, that's why they collect.

I don't think there is any escape from collecting once bitten, it is more coming to an acceptance of the disease that grips your body and mind.
Sounds like you like silver coinage (and who doesn't). Sometimes you just have to let a series speak to you. Often it is coming across that stellar example that makes you wonder if you could find more and build a complete set.
After building a complete set I realized that often eye appeal can be sacrificed because, you know you just have to have one of every date and mintmark. Now, I have switched to just buying the coin, raw, holdered, VF or MS grades as long as the beauty of it captures me. I know I have a great coin, when after I buy it, the first thing I do when I walk in the door is go to my office, pull out my loupe and enjoy it for a while. That is now my guiding principal.
I collect Barber Halves / Seated Halves primarily because they are larger, historic silver coins, relatively scarcer compared to other popular series and difficult to find really nice.

Sorry. I have actually been a member of this forum since 2011, but at some point I stopped checking. I went through a traumatic event. Sold everything. And the period between 2012 up to now is a haze. I don’t want anyone to be misled.
A type set is a good idea. Thanks. I have to get reacquainted. I lost my knowledge. The first thing I bought was a 1911 quarter eagle. Possibly a dumb purchase. But gold is low now. And my grandmother used to talk about the government knocking on her door in the 1930s, and how they were repossessing people’s gold. And I just Love the design of it. That era. Basically early 20th century design. Not just coins.
