I ran it by them. It's true. Can't say Cuba either.
You are correct abut Cuba but I have gotten around it by listing "Caribbean" with "star peso" and/or "Jose Marti peso" in the title. Could probably do the same for Iran & Sudan with the proper keywords.

Actually, the eBay bot is smarter than you think. You used to be able to use "Quba" but not anymore. So, simple changes like spacing may not work. It MAY also know "Persia" although maybe "Persha" or "Perza" might work.
For Sudan, you can use "South Sudan" but not "Sudan" - one's banned an one isn't.

Under coins in the Middle East, Iran was one of the choices. The coins listed said, "Iranian". Maybe you can put them in that heading, but not use the word Iran. eBay likes to think they care about following the law, except when it comes to fencing Chinese Counterfeits.
Where does it say in the law that you can’t used the country names, Cuba and Iran? What are you supposed to call Cuba, “The Peoples’ Republic of Castro?” Perhaps you could try “New Persia” for Iran. The Iranian Government was trying to link its heritage to Persia years ago.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
What would be the reasoning behind such an exclusion? @topstuf ...You said you spoke to someone at ebay... did they say why such a practice was in place?? Makes no sense to me... Cheers, RickO

It's an overly aggressive interpretation of Federal prohibitions on products from those countries.

There are multiple countries to which you can't ship Iranian coins. If you're listing in the Iran category and have those countries as shipping options (which will be on by default if you ship worldwide or to Europe overall), the listing will get bounced. Whenever I list something Iranian, I just set shipping to US only, and I've never had an issue getting a listing up. But whenever I forget to switch the shipping, my listing gets blocked.

Cuba and Sudan are also problematic.

By the way, that includes U.S. material from Cuba. LOL. I now only sell things from Kewba.

Try this: I R A N
Good idea, or maybe Persia? I didn't check to see if that was allowed.

Use " Iwalk" instead --- works fine.

DON'T ASK! Just post it.
hiijacker and Iran put together can cause more problem
That was funny!
There is still a lot of "Persia" numismatic material available on eBay. Just looked this evening. Perhaps half of it is recent listed. Much is pricey.
I've always liked the big silver coins with Persian Lion from the first part of the 20th Century.

Actually, there's a lot of "Iran" on eBay. Are you sure it's not an EU prohibition?

This is not new stuff. It has been discussed on the forum at least once in the last month (perhaps may have been in the Foreign and Ancients section).

Of course, the U.S. Treasury is part of the European Union.
Modern Persian Empire sounds nice.

This makes no sense to me. I just did a search on eBay “Iran” and 40,328 items pulled up.

I pulled up lots of coins with Iran in the title, and created a new listing with Iran in the title.
Maybe it is your area or something else you are doing. I was working in the world coins section. So it is not ebay, it is something else.

I find Cuban coins under all kinds of searches in combination with the word Caribbean
I suspect Persian or Persia searches would find some Iranian coins
