Do you expect your heirs to fight over your coin collection?

CoinstartledCoinstartled Posts: 10,135 ✭✭✭✭✭

Or will it be a smooth and harmonious transition?

To add the coins to their collection or for the sale proceeds? ;)

Buzzkiller thread. I think I have made it pretty clear and in writing what is to be done.

That is when the trouble usually begins.

No, they'll just sell it probably. I'll leave instructions.

That's what I'm doing. They don't listen to me now. I try.

They know where it is. They know where not to sell it. They know how to price it to current conditions. All bets are off after that.

No problem here - the instructions are already in the SDB as to who to contact at Heritage, the negotiation of how much the heirs will realize, (hammer plus), and who gets how much out of the realization.

Of course, the instructions are subject to revision if my contact person ceases to be at Heritage and, with the increases in the buyers' fee, that will also increase the amount of hammer-plus I have negotiated.

They might curse me, but they will have no need to fight over anything. ("Hey, I thought Dad had this really valuable coin collection...")

I used to have Heritage designated as well for my heirs. The ever increasing fees were a concern so I altered the instructions. I have instead named a trusted independent dealer. I have more hair than he does...but he is a bit younger. ;)

I have zero expectations and won't be disappointed from the grave. I do hope they (heirs) have as much fun as I had, though

They'll fight over who gets to ride shotgun to the beer store, but not the coins. Already discussed, written down and taken care of. Smooth sailing.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

I'll probably sell before that becomes a problem, but if I depart sooner than expect, I have a will that addresses the issue.

All 3 of my kids have collected over the years. I have brought them to shows, club meetings, auctions, flea markets, pawn shops, coin shops and basically submersed them in the hobby when they were young. I am hoping they will have fun with what I have left when I go.

No fighting, they aren't into coins. I told them to sell them and use the money as they see fit.

By that time I plan on owning only a few things I truly enjoy and want to pass down to an individual who can appreciate them. Family or not.

Nothing much to fight over. My kids have tenants in common ownership of all publications, materials, and copyrights. As for coins, well they can argue over the pocket change left from my last visit to 7-11. :)

I’m planning on not dying. If that doesn’t work, they’ll find a sheet of instructions, and a file of carefully maintained inventory lists and receipts. If they’re too stupid to follow instructions they’ll get what they deserve.

A friend once told me that Bill Anton claimed that he intended to dump his collection in the ocean because nobody else deserved to own any of his coins.

It's one valid solution that will DEFINITELY keep the heirs at bay...

Good pun! I have written general instructions...'Get at least 3 separate appraisals', ask on the boards about who . where, NO PAWN SHOPS etc.

No, it's already set up to be sold, and almost all of them are too disinterested it know what it is any way.
