Here's the newest addition to my 'privately made during the period of the design's circulation' collection. Someone definitely wanted to make sure no one else would be fooled:

I really love collecting these. I also picked up a nice Walker and Standing Liberty quarter:

    That's what it looks like, especially where it runs through the top of the 8 in the date.

    Having words, like "BAD" and "COUNTERFEIT" stamped on bogus paper money is not unusual. Getting counterstamp to punch in the word on a counterfeit coin is a step further.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Sub-treasuries and FRB branches went through different policies on handling counterfeits mixed in bank deposits. The fakes were always charged against the depositor, but sometimes returned and sometimes destroyed.

    The illustrated coin was likely accepted by a merchant, rejected by his bank, and punched "BAD" as an example for clerks. Some bank officers had personal collections of counterfeits, but among the few I've examined, none had punched coins in them.

    Hear are my “BAD” coins, good for nothing but scrap silver, they are harshly cleaned. In my youth when I started to collect I cleaned coins, (vary bad). Now years later I learned my lesson and I am more experienced in collecting and how to handle coins.
