ATB 5 oz silver roll call! Who is still collecting?

I just picked up a Arches National Park based on the fact I once locked my keys in my car there. I've been buying one a year. So far, (In P mint) I have:
Yosemite
Olympic
Chaco Culture
Perry's Victory
Arches
I would hate to bite the bullet and spend $800 on a Hawaii P 5 oz coin but the prices aren't going down and it looks like that's going to be the key to the series as interest has somewhat renewed and mintages are a lot higher.

<< <i>I've been getting one Unc from the mint and one bullion of each. Only graded ones from the first year. >>
+ 1..same scenario. The first year was purchased from APMEX already PCGS graded
<< <i>I get the subscription from the mint since its almost the same price as the bullion version after the discount. If it was not for the discount I would not be buying but how can you beat it when its only a few bucks more then the no mint mark version. >>
The subscription is a great idea, actually. I usually add about 5 oz of silver to my stack every month any way, so that's another way of doing it. Storage becomes the only real issue, as those boxes aren't small.

Each box is labeled. So, you can pop the coin, save it elsewhere in a secure location, and store your boxes in a non-secure area. If you want to sell, reunite coin and box.
I have been getting the "P" special issues since they were issued.
Every January, at FUN, I drop off the previous year's five coins for
PCGS to grade. I no longer buy the annual mint or proof sets but these
jumbo coins really grabbed me.
I have not followed the retail - but if it's true that the Hawaiian
issue is $800 - all I can say is Yahoo !!

Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !

Though actually the 5oz coins were instrumental in getting me back into collecting as I just thought they were so cool.

Anyway, have about half in PCGS SP69/70, and about half in the raw Mint Boxes.
Some of my favorite coins. I've been to a few of these parks, like the memories of Yosemite, etc.
Considering I've been to over 50 NPS venues, it still comes to quite a few. Of course one of the parks I hadn't been to was Hawaii, so I didn't get one of those... Figures.
(I finally just got a subscription...)

Hawaii may not turn out to be the key when final mintages are released. The mint usually includes orders that it can't fill due to inventory depletion in the final week's sales totals, and eventually the audited mintage figures come in lower than the sales totals for the final week.
There were 673 Denalis ordered in the final week of sales, so the number of coins actually sold could be anywhere from 14,552 to 15,225. There were 262 Acadias ordered in the final week of sales, so the number of coins actually sold could be anywhere from 14,716 to 14,978. There were 96 Hawaiis ordered in that coin's final week of sales, so the number of coins actually sold could be anywhere from 14,767 to 14,863.
So any one of these coins could be the lowest mintage for the series. We'll know for sure when the audited mintage figures are released, but that may be a year or two away.
I expect the final mintages to be very close to each other, so the differences may not matter. Hawaii is very popular, so I expect it to retain its price leadership regardless of the final outcome.

At least I can read the date on these.....
I have been collecting the ATB 5oz silver quarters for some time now i have both the SP70 and the MS69 from 2010 thru first 1/2 of 2018 I will collect all in both versions before i am through. I absolutely fell in love with them!! would love to hear from any passionate collector on theses ATB coin sets. I have been told they are too big a coin no room to store them It is poor investment I strongly disagree They are large, so bold! so beautiful! and so unlike any other coin I will love them until I die then my oldest grandson can worry about their value when i am gone. I say he will profit very well...lol
bev
I've gotten one of the bullion and one of the P issues for each, since the series' inception.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Wow. I was going to say exactly this. Only I did. Four years ago...
I have collected/accumulated them since the day one fiasco with the bullion version. Have a sub for the P's but grab additional ones that look to be low mintage. Switched from getting a few rolls of ASE's a year to a tube + of the bullion. Easy to store the bullion in the blue Mint box...the P's ARE a pain to store but worth it....and...if you really look at it storing five OGP ASE's uses up about the same or more space.
@b70mcevers....Welcome aboard....Those big silver coins are attractive... Cheers, RickO
ricko thanks if the ATB never increases in value I would still adore the collection
I just ordered an Arches National Park off of eBay and am awaiting its arrival any day. I was born in Utah and visited the arch shown on the coin about 20 years ago and have always been impressed by its location, formation, and beauty. I probably won't buy another 5 ouncer, but debated buying this one for months and finally pulled the trigger as a birthday gift for myself based solely on its personal meaning to me.
I have the subscription and I am still collecting them. I keep them in their original government packaging and it sure takes up a lot of storage space.

I had to separate out the pucks from the packaging, 'cause I got nervous having that much silver around. Have you picked all of them up lately? Through 2017, that's 40 coins, 200ozt or 16.5 troy pounds.
That's a lotsa silver...
Ten years down the road I see these as valued as nothing but bullion. There are too many of them, they cost too much and are very bulky. I can't see any reason why demand for them will continue much beyond the time when the series ends in 2021.
I stopped collecting them when the Mint eliminated the 10% subscription discount on them. Can't say that I miss them.
I didn't pay much attention to the 5oz ATBs until I found out that the city I spent my first few years of life in would be part of one of the releases. I'll get that one, but only that only.
I just read through this thread and learned some new things about the series. It sounds like there are some passionate collectors of these. I had no idea.
Just last week I saw one in person at a shop for the first time and it really was quite nice-nicer than I expected. I can see why people love them.
So few people smoke today, that we just don't need a lot of ash trays.
Anyone have a photo of what this collection would look like now - got to be a stack a mile high.
I've subscribed from the start. I get one of each. I keep them in the OGP - which is very bulky.
I like them because they're by far the largest and heaviest legal tender coins ever produced by the US Mint. It's a limited series with each coin having a different design unlike most other series where every coin looks the same which is quite boring. The ATB design theme and large planchet size results in some very interesting and attractive coin designs.

I like them, but I'm not a collector !!!
It's good to see that some are still interested.
What has everyone done with the 2010 Bullion ones?
Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.
I still collect both the bullion pieces and the collector pieces. I think they're great!
I knew it would happen.
Still have my three PCGS 2010 sets.....it was a project to get them but it worked out...
About the time I decided the 2012 Hawaii edition was cool as all hail.... it was yanked by the Mint. I was happy to see the GRC become the low mintage King. I figured soon I'll be able to snatch a Hawaii at a reasonable price. I'm still waiting. Don't forsee wanting any of the future designs.
I bought one slabbed(glacier national park) couldnt get past the oversized quarter look....never got another
They make a funny looking pocket piece. Don't try this, except at home, kids.

I have all the P mints to date, mostly in OGP. It's the only series I'm collecting. I just like them.
I have a few of the bullion versions, but except for those few (Hawaii, Vicksburg, Hot Springs) I find those unattractive.
I have bought a lot of these, one of my favorites. I also bought a scruffy one from APMEX so I could hold it, feel it, spin it on the table and hear it. Just wanted to be able to touch one of the couple hundred or so I've bought. Probably my favorite modern from the mint.
Count me in on both types.
I knew it would happen.
At some point, the Mint decided to add more detail to the reverses (than is on the quarter), and I have to say, some of the pucks in the last few years look pretty darn nice.
Sorta OT, I used to keep them in a round can (just larger than the diameter of the p-mint capsule), and it always rolled around in the SDB (and got pretty heavy), and started to get worried what would happen to the contents if I accidentally dropped it. So I decided to see what else could be done.
The capsule is 3.5" in diameter. I found you can stack 7 capsules in a 200-card sportscard box, or 14 in a 400-card box (with a cardboard separator between the two stacks of capsules.) A much better solution that no longer rolls around in the SDB and provides some crush space around the coins. I wonder if the cardboard will tone the pucks in time...
Now the packaging. That still takes up a couple of cubic feet of space in my basement...
I still am buying them get 2 of each automatic from Mint. Keep them in OMP unopened building a wall on my closet.
Best place to buy !
