OT but I was just looking at my penny album

AUandAGAUandAG Posts: 24,992 ✭✭✭✭✭

(see Wayte Raymond thread from earlier) when I got to thinking about what we call them.
Pennies, cents, etc.
Then it dawned on me that cent can be spelled scent or cent. Then.....................

I thought, which letter in scent is silent? The S or the C?

Damn, at that point I threw the album back in the safe and went and made a drink.

be well,
bob :)

Cents, yes. "Penny" not, but is ingrained in our culture.

Yeah, it's that English thing that comes through.
Can't get penny loafers, pennies from heaven, a penny for your thoughts, out of my mind.

    Need another drink, I think.

A drink sounds appropriate. Maybe something in a copper mug? :D

Penny must not have been used in the very old days. I have not heard half cents called called half pennys.

You forgot to put sent in the equation. :D

I still really like seeing coins in albums, you know what you have and what you need

For those that want to know. I collected these from circulation as a kid back in the 50's. No green spots either....had a good eye back then. I see I even found an 08s but not the 09s. I haven't touched these or added to them for over 60 years. Someday they will be the "fresh" to market that someone picked up at my kids estate sale!

Yep... I have an old - and incomplete - cent album.... been around for a long, long time.... Thought I had lost it many years ago, but turned up in an old box at my Mom's house...found it after she passed a couple years ago. I should get my rolls and jars of wheaties out and see how may holes I can fill in that old album. Maybe this winter.... ;) Cheers, RickO

does it makes sense to collect cents by scent?

  • SmudgeSmudge Posts: 9,873 ✭✭✭✭✭

Maybe fill one of the spots with a Merriam Civil War Token - good for a scent !

Maybe it is a good time to re-start @AUandAG @ricko ... what you have are others dream to behold.
IMO it's :( for leaving them in the safe......go put some life back to it <3

"Scent" is something a dog looks for which might be laying in the street and other places. "Cent" is what you often find laying the street. Only Joseph Merriam got confused on that point, and he was actually making a joke, which leaves us chuckling today.
