I admit I have learned how to remove the haze off modern proof coins. That's the extent of it however.

Yes. You have a fever and the only prescription is more coins!

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Smoebody told me to use baking soda pastes to clean up silver coins when I was a kid. Wrecked a few nice Standing Liberty Heads that way. :(

In more recent years, I've used acetone to get PVC off coins a few times, and occasionally to remove haze.

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,804 ✭✭✭✭✭

Occasionally I will dip a coin, acetone when necessary. But I am happy to do nothing most of the time. I love a crusty original surface! Some coin admittedly need some attention.

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,096 ✭✭✭✭✭

I like to use @$$-a-tone just in case there may be pvc.

  • johnny9434johnny9434 Posts: 29,366 ✭✭✭✭✭

    no

  • StorkStork Posts: 5,207 ✭✭✭✭✭

I guess I'm a 1.5. Acetone is in my basement and I'll use that fairly liberally at times. Thorns for actual gunk removal. I have tried a little dilute MS70 in the past as well, specifically when the pvc was strong and I was not satisfied with the acetone. Despite labeling, that did affect toning, which made me think the toning was just another level of contaminant. No acid dips and nothing more extensive. Oh, and an olive oil soaking on a bronze medal once.

I think that haze removal on that Yemen lion looks like a nice job.

That said, I don't consider removing contaminants a type of 'coin doctoring' per se.

Will you teach me to be a 4-5? You should start a coin "doctor" school.

Me too! I might be willing to spring for some crap coins to work on. There are at least half a dozen places in town where I am sure I could come up with material in a jiffy.

    Once or twice.

It was necessary and improved the appearance and protected the coin from further damage.

Is anyone a coin COLLECTOR doctor? ;)

I think that's called an ophthalmologist, or perhaps a gastroenterologist.

I wish we could talk to the 4 voters for "OTHER." :) At one ANA Summer Seminar, the instructor called a coin doctor on the phone for some input during class.

Or a psychiatrist, or a proctologist.

    I've dipped and MS70ed, but I promise I didn't enjoy it. Am I a coin doc now? >:)

  • SonorandesertratSonorandesertrat Posts: 5,695 ✭✭✭✭✭

At an ANA Summer Seminar, I had lunch with a coin doctor and 4 others (who didn't have a good idea concerning what we were talking about, particularly things involving chemicals). I incidentally learned that the coin doctor did a lot of business with a dealer whom I had previously viewed as a straight-up guy. Several of the instructors that summer were widely rumored to be coin doctors.

At one time I had a proof silver coin with a milk spot, I took my white pearl eraser and removed the spot. It worked fine.

The best teachers know the "ropes." Just because a person has "worked on" coins before does not make them a "bad" guy. Even security companies learn from formed "hackers."

The person I alluded to was still working on coins. In one sense, I don't view active coin doctors as the real 'bad guys'. They typically have business arrangements with dealers who pass on altered coins to unsuspecting collectors, and sometimes dealers actively work with coin doctors to identify candidate coins (e.g., up for auction) for purchase, doctoring, upgrading, and eventual sale. THOSE dealers are the bad guys.

For the 3% of the anonymous voters who 'outed' themselves as coin doctors: what percentage of Forum members do you think wind up with your products? A WAG is all that I am looking for.

You may communicate via an alt, passenger pigeon, whatever.

I clicked 3. I have been able to save a number of coins that were pretty horrible looking. I don't "dip" coins in the traditional sense but can improve many that still easily grade.

Real coin doctors get detected eventually. Then they must submit coins through someone else.

Others are doomed to stand up at a sink all day conserving coins they cannot afford to own!
