I feel you. I have started bidding my top bid with 4 seconds left. If I win, I win. If not, I did the best I could at the time. I did almost break my phone over an unattributed 1910S-RPM-001 wheat cent once. No one had bid on it. No one was watching it. I bid the opening bid with seconds left and lost it by $0.25. They may have bid way high, but I will never know if I could have won it or not. Now I always bid my limit at the end.

I still haven't picked that stinking RPM and that was about 2 years ago!

Never, never expect to cherry pick a no-bid auction at the last minute with an opening bid. You are probably not the only smart guy watching.

Go higher...maybe 10 or 20%. If no one else competes you'll get it at the opening bid. If there's a competitor (likely) your higher bid will beat him.

I learned this lesson long ago.

Sniping is a legitimate bidding strategy. It can backfire if you can't confirm your bid if you wait too long to click. Would you be angry if you were at a live auction and got out bid? Disappointed sure.

Have you won against a snipe bid? Were you excited and happy? How do you think the looser felt?

It's OK to vent. Adjust your bid strategy and keep hunting. Good luck next time.

Some folks seem to be taking this thread WAY too seriously. Most of us have probably been on both sides of the thrill of victory / agony of defeat that defines the eBay auction experience. @CommemKing, out of curiosity what was the coin?

Has anybody used one of the "snipe apps" that I've heard exist? I don't understand the need. I usually like to bid in the last few seconds so I don't over pay by revealing my interest and max bid, but when I'm out bid in the last second, I realize that some one was willing to pay more than me, and given the opportunity, I wouldn't have re-bid and paid more... regardless of how they got their bid in.

I just bid my maximum and let the snipers snipe. If someone snipes me at the last second, eBay will out bid them on my behalf after the auction closes assuming my maximum bid is higher than the sniper's bid.

Back in the old days of Ebay, people could see your actual username instead of the cryptogram you see now.

I'd find something - say a nice proof set with cameos, or a variety of some sort. I'd bid. I was being trolled by other bidders and then they would out bid me. I did all the work - they got the prize.

I converted to sniping way back then - eSnipe was just the ticket. Nobody knew what I was bidding on until I put my max bid in at the end. The only exception was to place an early bid to kill a Buy-it-Now.

So although I understand the OP's pain, these days there are better ways to play the game.

This hobby should be fun. Snipping is one of the reasons why I have bought very little off eBay. I know, I know, there have tons of bargains cherry picked there over the years, but when you bid hundreds or thousands of dollars and get sold out for a quarter or whatever the increment is, it sucks.

It was a bid on a nice rainbow toned Pilgrim Commem from "great toning" on ebay. My bid was about $150 over the PCGS price guide price. I was outbid by one bid at the last second.

ebay is not an auction site. You can withdraw your bids at any time. You can rejoin the 'auction' after you have withdrawn your 'bid'. ebay 'bids' are not an actual commitment to buy as they are in real auctions. There is no requirement to honor your bid and no penalty for cheating.
ebay sellers lose money too, because ebay listings end at a known, specific time. If ebay were to institute a policy that bids continue after the listing's end until no bid is received for a set period of time (say, 10 minutes), listings would sell for higher values, as sniping would be ineffective and individuals would be not be able to 'hide' their bids with snipes. Others would have an opportunity to exceed the sniped bids.

In this day and age and as long as e-bay has been around its hard to believe that everyone doesn’t use snipe services. Put the max bid you are willing to pay, set the snipe for 8 seconds and walk away. You either win or don’t.

I really like sniping on ebay.... lots of fun to wait until the last three or four seconds and drop a nuclear bid... done it many times. Provides a small adrenaline rush without the danger of bungee jumping. Cheers, RickO

I don't watch the coins I am snipping. I lose a lot of coins sniping anyway. I will throw in a bid just to have it show up on the bid page, and then snipe with target price.

Jump on board, this is the norm. Kinda like online bill pay for your cell phone.

Gavelsnipe. It's free and has never failed me. Sniping doesn't guarantee a win. You still have to be willing to pay more than everyone else.

The problem with last second nuclear bids is if someone else uses the same strategy. You could wind up having to pay your nuclear bid.

I just sniped 2 auctions this afternoon. One of which I was the only bidder on. If it arrives and is as nice as I think it is, it will be a really nice win. It will also prove the "by the coin and not the holder" adage.

I buy special toned coins that never come cheap. I figure out the most I’m willing to pay then enter that high amount in the last few seconds. Is that sniping?
