A few questions if you buy/sell at the BST Forum.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

What is your assessment of things, good/bad/slow?? Is stuff selling or just sitting for weeks or months?? What sells easily and what doesn't sell at all??

I buy on the BST fairly often when there's something that I want. Those coins that are realistically priced sell fairly easily while those coins that are unrealistically priced just sit there week after week. It's free so there's nothing to lose to offer something on the BST. There's also a monthly BST thread in the Precious Metals Forum for bullion related items.

    +1

I’ve sold quite a bit of pre-1865 mostly CAC gold coins the last few months. Every coin IMHO was nice and I didn’t have any dreck. I had realistic price expectations. I based prices on what the coins were selling on GC, eBay, and elsewhere and not what I paid for them. I made a few dollars on some and lost a few dollars on most of them. Every transaction was smooth without any drama. And best of all the BST is free.

If I were to sell the coins on eBay or GC I’d have to absorb the buyers fee, sellers fee, and listing fees and there’s no guarantee what they would sell for.

I have purchased off the BST and all transactions have been fast and product as promised...A few years back, I sold some gold Britannia's there... fast sale and great transaction. Cheers, RickO

I've never used it, but I wouldn't hesitate to deal with any of the established members.

I have bought multiple times with no problems whatsoever. Easy way to find items at decent prices from established members.

I sell on occasion but price wise it is often a race to the bottom...As a seller I see other sellers continue to lower prices until it sells. I can get more on other venues, but, the BST is so easy and the people are nice and have good funds, so I use if for certain items..

I know it is safe, what I am trying to get comments on is the current state of the coin market.

I have bought and sold several times with excellent results. If prices are reasonable things seem to move quickly. A lot of overpriced stuff stays up for a long time. This may give one the false impression that it is kind of stagnant.

I bought couple coins in the past. No issue at all. All the members are honest.

Not all members are honest. Once in awhile someone gets scammed on the BST. Only buy from well established members with a fairly high post count and some longevity here as an active participant. If you buy a coin from a new member, ask them to send the coin first with payment sent after the coin is received. If they refuse, pass on the deal. Don't be afraid to ask for references from a seller.

I recently purchased some medals (up to $400 each). Earlier this year, I listed a couple of nice (MS63) War of 1812 Mint medals, and did not get any takers.

I don't sell nearly as much on BST as I do on other sites like ebay and such. I think if you expect realistic prices , then stuff sells for the most part. I see a lot of stuff On the BST that is lets say "optimistically priced"

If a coin is overpriced on the BST, I'll let it sit unsold for a few days and then I'll make a realistic offer which is usually accepted.

I did not 'hit' "disagree" on your post.............but I do disagree............I do not think that all "members" here are honest, JMO

I think probably the same approach would work with bullion/90% JMO "

Gold $20's, Modern Gold commems and Morgan Dollars, prices are weak to may as well melt them.

Others can weigh in other categories.

PCGS3000 Index is still trending down which would indicate to me that sales are soft. (last uptick was Dec. 2014) The proof Jefferson nickels in my thread last week were purchased on ebay for a fraction of what the owner originally paid for them. Don't know whether to buy, or get out completely. LOL

I've purchased quite a few items on the BST site. Got burned a couple of times, but for the most part, met some great people with great items at great prices !!! :)

Both bought and sold, although more sales of late. They have worked out well for all based on the feedback I have received from the buyers.

To echo what Perry Hall is saying.

If there were a way to track the spread in coins, the way say the 2Y/10Y treasury spread is tracked, I'd say it's widening. There's money ready and waiting for choice stuff, which is basically anything with a multiplier- eye appeal, absolute rarity, condition rarity, novelty; but the bid on the rest seems to just be plummeting. The CAC effect but spreading to most any kind of differentiator.
