What would this grade in a really rough estimation. (Morgan Silver Dollar 1880 O normal date)

I just wanted to know if I could get a rough estimation from anyone telling me what this coin could be graded around, I’m guessing somewhere in the AU category.

It looks AU. Does it look glossy in hand? It is hard to comment more without better photos. I can't appropriately assess the surfaces and luster.

  • I will take a better picture, and yes it does seem glossy.

Looks to be at least AU58, and could be as high as MS62 depending on hairlines - hard to see in the light it was taken in. Nice '80-O.

I would get the black spot off of it.

  • How would I attempt to take the blak spot off without damaging the coin?

Based on new pics, AU details cleaned .

I don't think it has been polished. Looks like there is plenty of luster there if I'm reading the pics right. Looks AU55 IMO

Excluding the spot, which could be a problem, I'd say between AU-58 and MS-63. The spot might come off, but you need expert help to do it.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Ok so it doesn’t seem to be cleaned is what I am getting, I got it off a friend who had a coin collection.

If the hairlines are light, it looks low-MS, perhaps MS-61.

    High AU

    58ish.
Something looks "off" about the coin though and I can't say why.
    It's most likely the images.
Can you post additional pictures with better lighting?
    That would help me.

Mid to high AU. Some O Morgan's are weakly struck. The Morgan experts here can address this. Looks like wear on the hair around the ear. Better photos would help. Welcome.

Low MS...The black spot will likely require professional attention...We would need better pictures for further comments...Cheers, RickO

The best answer is "AU58 to MS63". It's rather hard to tell from photos. I don't see cleaning in the 1st photo and the 2nd set of photos is blurry, so I'll refrain from judgment.

Frankly, it doesn't much matter price-wise for that coin. It's an UNC-ish widget.
