A pair to share, 38-D buffs

ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,169 ✭✭✭✭✭

Some of my more recent posts sought opinions from the board as to which one of two same grade buffalos to keep. For these two I've come to the conclusion they are both keepers. As a backdrop, I have never owned a 67, figuring that pieces graded 66 should be pretty darn sharp for my tastes. Still, the thought lingered.

Enter coin #1, which is the 67. I was able to get it for price guide money, which is reasonably close to action results. As soon as I got it in hand, it was clear why it got the higher grade. The luster is blinding, and the toning pattern super attractive. It is technically sound in ever way. I was all set- this was going to be the 38-D for the set.

Coin #2 has been in the set forever. I went to the SDB with intentions to sell, but once I revisited this old friend, it made me wonder why I sought a 67 in the first place. The luster is just shy of the 67, with reverse toning of blue/purple that is to die for (again, at least to my tastes). It is also a D/D. I had it listed on BST briefly, and showed it to a couple of dealers at the recent Baltimore show who thought the 66 grade was "just stupid" and a strong candidate for upgrade.

In the end I decided the two looked great together. They really do compliment each other nicely. So they will stay...

Coin 1, PCGS 67

Coin 2, PCGS 66

Both as pretty as can be. Yes I'd keep them too. Such beautiful Buffs

I like them both.. I've found it very hard to turn down let alone part with an attractive '38-D. Which is probably why I have quite a herd of them in my collection. :)

1 has more detail but I'm leery of the carbon spots.

    Keep 'em and enjoy 'em.

Both are excellent coins...I do prefer the 67 and can see why it is one point higher...at least to my eyes...Cheers, RickO

Yes, Joe did them. He is my go to guy. I suspect his excellent images are part of reason my set got the nod for Best digital album last year.

Why not send the D/D to get it in the variety holder?

I'd keep them both if they were mine. I totally understand. I think that why I have quite a few dupes in my collection, like 7 or 8 37-P's in 66 from the same submission.

I like them both - if either one is a white rattler, I'll make you a crazy offer! :D

I would keep them both. I like them both. I would have the D/D attributed and regraded. All you need now is the D/S (if you don't already have it).

  • ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,169 ✭✭✭✭✭

The D/D is attributed. I just sold my D/s. Had the attributed ones from when I was doing the NGC registry, all became somewhat redundant on PCGS and with the addition of the 67, but couldn’t part ways with the D/D
