I'm going to my first show in almost 10 years next month...what will be different?

I have enjoyed reading the show reports that many others have posted recently. I haven't been to one since 2008. At the time, the coin market was HOT. I remember walking away from a table telling the dealer I would consider one of the coins he was selling. Thought I would take a quick lunch break and decide if I wanted it or not. When I decided I did(about 25 minutes later), I went back and it had already sold! It seems as though things are a bit more quiet at the present time. I consider myself a collector of the highest quality I can afford, but have never spent thousands of dollars at a time for my hobby! I am hoping to find some nicer stuff at maybe better prices than were being asked back then. I will also look for unique pieces that maybe do not fit into my "normal" collecting pattern as well as rarely seen holders. I'm sure my interest will sway back toward the coins that I just can't get away from(Buffalo Nickels, Mercury Dimes, Walking Liberty Halves and Morgan Dollars), but I am going to go with a completely open mind to see as much as I can without feeling overwhelmed.

Which show and where?
Very little will be different.
I am going to do the worlds fair of money in Phila in August. Peace Roy

Nothing! Some dealers will still have the same coins!!

The court jester does not play, but gently pulls the strings…
I know you are joking but there's an element of truth. Some dealers have the same coins for sale month after month after month after...…. You have to wonder if they are running a coin business or a museum.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

Prices!
HAPPY COLLECTING
I will try...although I have to admit that I know zero about gold coins ! Lol
Have fun and good luck !!!
No change lots good deals
More dealers in it just for the business and fewer for the hobbyist. Everyone thinks they are an expert.
But one thing hasn't changed. When buying, the dealers coins are PQ, when selling or even trading your coins they all have problems.
Everything and everyone will be 10-years older, including the mustard stains. Grades will be inflated as will asking prices, but real value can be found if you are persistent and know your coins.
The EAC dealers are now carrying coins graded by the TPG's....same coins, just with much higher grades on them
Best of luck, enjoy - and please post a report!
Thanks everyone. I guess I am a bit excited even though it is not until that last weekend of August. Just trying to get ready for a fun day!
I would wager eight out of ten slabbed coins will be Morgan and Peace dollars
2008 to 2018; lot of changes. Yuge!
Interesting coincidence, my last coin show was in 2008 as well.....I lived in Seattle at that time and retired in the latter part of the year... no shows where (or near) I live now... From the show reports posted here, I would expect you will see prices a tad higher, grades a tad inflated. You should find plenty of coins in your area of interest. If you are looking to 'break out'...pick up a Five Dollar Gold Indian (Incuse design).... Probably should get one already slabbed... Good luck and be sure to give us a show report. Cheers, RickO
Always a great show. You will enjoy it.
If there at lunch or dinner time try Willie’s Fish Fry at 301 West Emery St. It doesn’t look like much and not the easiest place to find if you aren’t familiar with Dalton but they make one of the best fish sandwiches I’ve had. Things on the rest of the menu sound great but I can’t vouch for them since I’ve never tried anything else. If you like beer and pizza give Cherokee Brewing & Pizza Company at 207-B W Cuyler St. a try, another hard to find place (at least for me the first time) in a warehouse in back of other buildings on the street. Just remember, no beer before you go shopping at the show.

Treasures hidden. Keep an eye out , and you'll find at least one, among the search. Well that's my hope, anyway.
Practice makes perfect & nobody is perfect. So, practice being nobody and be perfect !
Old dealers will be older and stained shirts will be the same.
have fun!

I hope so. I will probably try and find the pizza. I don't drink, so I'm not worried about that part! LOL!
Dealers no longer us abaci for calculating. And they don't maintain records by tablet and chisel.
Dang....no more rods, beads and ball huh?
I wonder what the record is for a coin going to a show. Some have probably been to more than a thousand shows.
Which holds the record for the most shows attended? A coin or a mustard stain?
You will probably see fewer older coins because many of them are sitting in collections, and many of the owers seem less likely to sell them, especially if they are nice. Large cents and half cents are offered even less often because many of them have been soaked up in die variety and die state collections. Even the late dates (1840 to 1857) are part of this trend.
There will still be loads of common date Morgan Dollars available. You might see less Proof sets because the prices have gotten so low on many of them that the dealers don't bother to carry them.
But they have found a way to use their sun dials indoors, so that is impressive.

Plan on wading through alot more chicks... Apparently, coin collectors are trending now on Instagram and other popular media sites.
The bourse food will be exactly the same. Almost literally

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Sad, but probably true.
I plan to have my first table at a major show at Dalton.
Hallco, I should have some super nice Walking Liberties for sale. I will let you know my table number when I get it.
Great! Please do. I am planning to be there when the doors open to the public on Saturday morning.
If you live near Atlanta, you should attend the Marietta show this Sunday.
Go to Coinzip.com for details.
It will be a good warmup for Dalton. You should learn and be more prepared for the big show. Just a thought...
I will have a table there also.
I look forward to meeting you.
Lee
I hope it’s a very successful show for you
Jim
I went to the Marietta show once a long time ago. I don't live close enough to make it there on a regular basis unfortunately. I have been to ANA Money shows and large Whitman shows in the past, so I don't think Dalton will be too intimidating(fingers crossed)! Lol.
I am sure there will be lots of C- and D-mint gold on hand! Grant Campbell with Dalton Gold and Silver (Table 402/404) always has a nice selection, as do the nice folks at Gold Rush Gallery (Table 310). With 300 dealers and 400 tables, it's pretty hard not to find some baubles that are appealing! And there are probably many others! We will be doing this great show again after missing a year or two for health reasons (and we're feeling much better now). We'll be at Table L6, turn left as you enter the hall and we're against the front wall. We'll have a great selection of Lincoln cents, type, and yes, Morgan dollars, some great Mexican and Canadian coins, raw and slabbed material, some random flotsam and jetsam, and some of our slabs will even lack CAC green beans! The draft program has our last name misspelled but at least they got the VDB Coins part correct.

Please be sure to come by and say hi and tell us who you are on this forum so we can put faces with names!
And have a great day!
Kind regards,

The Dalton shows have always exceeded my expectations. I do not set up but do quite well selling off old inventory.
Plus, I always find something to add to the herd. This year, I have something new to look for - Bust Halves.
Too far for me to make it a day trip so I stay overnight someplace interesting.
I need to work on my plan to attend in August.

Not much, the dealers will all be a few years older and will start complaining if you pull out a greysheet. You will also see many coins graded higher then they would have 10 years ago, complete with fancy little stickers all over the slabs. That's about it.
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
Retiring at 55, what day is today?
I won't be carrying a greysheet. I plan to have a my own "willing to pay price" for all of the coins I will be seeking. Anything else I just happen to find, I will ask a price. If it's too high for my liking, I will just pass. If not, I will buy it.
