Would you?

If you were President of PCGS or Marketing Director, would you make sure that every counterfeiter you exposed was exposed in the media? I sure would.....

    A couple of problems.

First, they would have to be convicted, or you would have civil law suit on your hands.

Second, the U.S. Government really does not seem to be all that interested in it. The one convection I have seen was for a guy who was marketing counterfeit coins in counterfeit NGC slabs. The "raw counterfeits" are still getting in here with what seems to be not much in the way problems for those who are doing it.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

This. No good deed goes unpunished. Yes you would win if you could prove it, but litigation is expensive. A conviction would result in a summary dismissal of a libel suit against you because it legally establishes guilt. Truth is a good and absolute defense.

Okay, what if they wait till the guy is convicted? The gov't can prosecute and PCGS just has to be a witness or expert or such, right?

I doubt the media would care much after the first few convictions, but it would be worth a shot so as long as it didn't cost me money.

I would ripple the label area of the holder so that no sticker could adhere.

We need a very wealthy collector who has achieved everything he/she wants numismatically to take up the cause - kinda like the Koch brother that goes after the wine counterfeiters. He doesn't care about the cost (he's spent over $40 million to date), but the principle. He hates being cheated and doesn't believe the cheaters should get off scot free...

Maybe just an alerts section on their website, rather than going to the media and exposing themselves to lawsuits. Complicated issue. I imagine their legal team is considering the best course of action. Counterfeiting is a huge and growing problem.

More and more counterfeit coins/slabs seem to be showing up... I hope something is done soon... Since we see them, there is likely a lot more out there.... Let's keep this visible whenever encountered...Cheers, RickO

You would be adding tremendous costs (legal expenses mostly) to the PCGS business model. Those costs by necessity would be passed on to their customers (us). JMHO

PCGS should try to hire the A-Team to track down and stop the counterfeiters...

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.

The collectible industry is but a flea to the overall economy and no politician nor LE agency will allocate precious resources to prosecute tiny gnats. They have bigger fish to fry.

It would be nice if the ANA would throw its weight around a bit more.
