No real feedback, a very rare coin from a relative's collection....It would be funny if it wasn't scary. Maybe we can bid it north of $100K before it goes "poof" lol

**I have inherited this coin from my late father's collection. I am not a coin collector or numistmacist. Its a wonderfully well-preserved and obviously lovingly cared for example of this transitional early gold half eagle. This coin could easily pass for uncirculated if not for the slightest amount of rub on Liberty’s band and a couple of her curls.

While the exact proportion of 1834 Classic Head half eagles struck with the Crosslet 4 date style is unknown, the population is far smaller than that of the Plain 4 date style. Gold coin author and specialist David Akers noted that the Crosslet 4 “…has appeared at auction less often than any other date of this type including 1838-C” and suggested it is “…**

Sounds like he could be a numistmacist in the making.....

It is in AU Capitals inventory. I wrote Russ and reported on eBay last week

There goes that link again. Selling a coin like that, one would think the photos would be much better. The sales pitch is cheesy for sure.

I like this at the bottom:

"*****Your payment is due 12 hours after the auction ends. I will ship it after your payment is received. Pay PAL isn't preferred. PayPal will hold funds, claiming it is fair, it is not. I prefer West*** Uni** transfer, bank cashier's check, or personal check. You are protected from fraud under eBay's money back guarantee, and myself who has integrity and will return your funds within 48 hours. ********"

Actually, the photos are stolen from the listing for the real coin.

I'm surprised the guy doesn't want Bitcoin or gold bullion in exchange for "his" coin.

  • skier07skier07 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭✭✭

Unfortunately there are 22 bids on the coin.

  • jmlanzafjmlanzaf Posts: 37,714 ✭✭✭✭✭

I reported it and then called eBay myself. I provided the link to AU Capital Management to eBay and pointed out to them the request for a WEstern Union payment. The fraud analyst promised to send the report in himself with the explanation and the details.

I said to the guy that if it was only being sold for $25,000, it made sense as a buy/sell transaction. But the auction without reserve coupled with the Western Union request makes it appear fraudulent and hard to reverse should something bad happen. He agreed and promised to send it on immediately. Of course, it's a holiday, but we'll see how long it takes for anything to happen.

I will say that it would be easier if eBay had a text box on their reporting form. By itself, the listing is modestly suspicious, but only if you read the little note at the bottom requesting a money order or Western Union payment. Even then, the coin itself is real and in the PCGS database. It's only when you couple it with the fact that it is at AUCM (thanks @Boosibri and @logger7 for the info and link) that it appears to be a slam dunk fraud.

It's a little annoying to have to call them because of the lack of text box. But they did call me within 60 seconds and took my report immediately. We'll see what happens.

At the very least, it's a copyright violation as he stole the pictures AND the text from AUCM...

    Listing is gone.

Kudos to eBay! Less than 90 minutes after my phone call. I have to give them credit, they jumped right on it.

Kudos also to @logger7 and @boosibri. You saved someone some money. Don't know who or how much. They will never know they should thank you. Nonetheless, you did someone a solid.

I asked the joker a couple questions:
"Do you know if the coin has been sent to cac?" Response: No I do not believe so.

"How much would you take for that rare beauty if you pulled it off ebay now??? Do you take Bitcoin?? How about US gold coins??" Response: I will only end the auction if I get 10k. Sent Via WU. Or over night FedEx cashier's check.

    Weird. Maybe it's an error?

There is someone here who gives me frequent disagrees, often on things that can't be disagreed with. LOL. I mean, sometimes I just ask a question. How can you disagree with a question?

He should have asked for $25k, then he could have bought the actual coin, sold it to you and then stayed "in business".

You guys did a great job on this. I myself would not of taken the time as I really don't care if a person is out there selling fake coins. Your much better than me. I was too busy cooking and smoking ribs and pork shoulder for everybody on the grill. Good job.

I don't know how that got there. I removed it. Sorry for the glitch.

The fun part here: it WASN'T a fake coin. It was a real coin, in the PCGS registry, that just didn't happen to be owned by the person selling it.

I may sell an 1804 $ on eBay [given to me by my great grand-pappy, been in the family for years] and then retire to Costa Rica.
