Thanks to John Frost for publishing the only known image of William Barber in the recent Gobrecht Journal. This was a miniature done when we was young, probably 1840's.

I think you might be off a century, but interesting photo.

I remember how excited John was when he told me about the image.

I think you meant to write 1840's.

Fantasic find! So far as know there is only one image of his son, Chargles Barber that was taken from a group photo of the engravers at the U.S. mint.

I will down load this picture for my personal use. I hope that you won't mind if I use it for a Power Point presentation now and then.

Now if you could could get an image of Robert Scot or John Reich, our set of images for Chief U.S. Mint Engravers would be complete. ;)

John Frost has a wonderful article in the current Gobrecht Journal about William Barber. He met with family descendants and revealed that other never published images of Charles were found.

He shows William Barbers grave site and tombstone in the article.

A very high quality miniature painting. I wonder who the artist was?

Julia Margaret Cameron often dressed her models in outfits to fit a specific period and was big on a moody look (very unusual for that period). I'm not quite sure how she fits into this discussion but I like her photographs.

I can't say I see much in the way of resemblance between the image of William and pictures I've seen of Charles. But the engraving that Charles did does hint of more of one.

    Interesting history.

And the lady is very beautiful.

Just a temporal contrast to William Barber 'jeune et vieux.'

The "oldest" of the Hydrant grandchildren, a girl, came to me today and said, "Grandpa, I've been looking at concert videos on the internet and the girls in the crowds a long time ago were WAY more pretty than they are today." " Why? " I asked. " They didn't have tattoos or cell phones and they wore bikini tops and people left them alone. " she replied. My reply, "Yes they were. Throw your cell phone away, and......DON'T GET A TATTOO!" As for the bikini tops? O. k. by me!!!!!!

So many paintings/pictures seem to depict the subject with those 'sleepy eyes'....not sure why, but seems to be an artifact of the period. Cheers, RickO
