Some collectors have told me I'm crazy for collecting coins like this one. I find them interesting, so I collect them.

    Likely a pocket piece during some hard times. There would be something interesting about the history of a coin like this if the story could be told

    Won't be slabbed, can't read the date.

    Looks like a rare Lincoln half dollar. probably worth a fortune. In all honesty, I would submit as well

    If the date cannot be determined, I don't think that you can get it certified with a grade. Since there are 1892 and 1893 Columbian Half Dollars, you can't determine the exact date on that one.

    Even if the exact date could be determined, please explain the rationale to have that coin slabbed?

    It could sell for a premium as part of the "poorest known and undamaged" coin registry.

    Agree as long as it's slabbed with a straight grade. As has been pointed out this coin can't be slabbed since there is no date.

    I don't collect them, but I can't get rid of them either :) This has been my pocket piece for a few years now.

    I think all of these are beauties. I love lowballs. When I found out there was a name for them and looked them up, I briefly was disparaged by the idea that I then felt motivated to seek only examples that would, if ever submitted, straight grade.

    But thankfully I quickly forgot about that and got back to not caring how they would grade or if the date was readable.

    @ajaan thanks for sharing this!

    Why would you sell an 1893-S for melt? :p

    Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

    A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

    A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
