1905 Indian Head Cent

This IHC belonged to my wife's grandfather years ago. My father-in-law gave this (along with several other coins) to us not long before he passed away last year. The coins were all stored in an old vinyl zipper bag, many loose in it, most appear to have significant PVC residue.
I'm not sure if I'm seeing residue on the cent or not? It looks like it's been in the cardboard holder for decades. Any thoughts?

It has been improperly cleaned, probably dipped, and what you see is a combination of re-toning and perhaps a reaction to the dip agent which was not completely rinsed, especially on the reverse.
It's a shame because it looks like the coin was Mint State or close to it before it was cleaned.
Certainly appears to have dip residue that was poorly rinsed - as Bill said above....Did not see any PVC on the coin, but the pictures are blurry.... Cheers, RickO
It was plated and used as jewelry.
If you want to remove it from the holder and treat it with acetone to remove any PVC that you suspect, you certainly won't hurt the appearance or the value of the coin.
It looks like a nice memento of your relatives, in spite of the issues.
It’s a neat connection to your grandfather. That’s cool and maybe even kicks off another collector in the family.
That’s what happened to me. My in laws gave me some circ coins to look at and after looking them up online in mint state, I was like “I must have one!!”
Thanks for the help.
