Any horse racing cards available?

HallcoHallco Posts: 3,621 ✭✭✭✭✭

Prefer 70s or older. Oddball stuff welcome as long as it is genuine. Please message me if you have anything available. Looking for bigger names(Seabiscuit, Man O' War, Triple Crown or Ky Derby, Preakness or Belmont Winners, Horse Racing Hall of Fame members, etc). NOT looking for Jockey cards. Thanks!

The only horsey cards I have are a set my daughter left behind that pictures all Kentucky Derby winners that was put out by the Kentucky Derby Museum near Churchill Downs. She updated it each year with the new winner card until she left for college. Not sure what the first year of issue was but it did picture all winners on individual cards back to the beginning. Do not know if it is still updated or if not in what year they stopped.

Hi Bishop. Thanks! Yes, I am very familiar with those. I actually have all of the ones I care about at the moment. I really appreciate you showing me those though. Thank you!

I've got a 1968 Atlantic Oil panel with Damascus (67 Preakness & Belmont winner) if you're interested.

Just in case others are interested in what they look like, and I just think threads are more interesting with pics ...

Also, I don't have any, but there are several horses in the 1937 Kellogg's Pep Stamps set, most notably Exterminator the 1918 Derby winner. Pompoon, Sun Beau, Top Flight, and likely others are in the set as well.

Thanks! I will try to find some.

Rarest are probably cards I have never seen or heard of! Lol. I guess "worse" would just be a matter of individual taste. I personally don't care for many of the Panini releases from the last 15 years although they seem quite popular based on prices.

Figured I would bump since it has been a while and this is the time of year I love to follow the horses! And a special thank you to @LarkinCollector...I was able to acquire both of the ones shown above last year! :)

Hey there! I have all of the Sportscasters that I want at the moment. If I decide to add some additional cards in the future I will let you know which ones i need. Thanks for the reply.

Figured I would bump this to celebrate the end of a great 2019 Ascot! Probably won't get any replies(and that's fine)! :D

  • I have no cards that fit your request, but I do have something you may like... When you went to the track on the day that the Shoe was riding his last mount, there were special tickets printed memorializing "The Shoes Last Ride." I bought one ticket on him, and he finished out of the money on that last race. Do you have one of these? I wanted to attach a pic of this ticket, but I can't find it at this time. Should you show interest in this lil' piece of history, I'll buckle down, find it, and attach a pic for ya. Let me know, and good luck finding all you want for your collection! ---- AcesCasino

Hi @AcesCasino and welcome to the forum! That sounds like a great ticket to have, but I am mostly looking for just the horses and not jockeys. Thanks for the reply

  • No problem, my friend! It was nice to think back to that day, thanks to you. Good luck w/your collection!

You can find a lot of the types of horses you are looking for in postcard form. If you are ever at a paper or postcard type show they can sometimes be hidden in the Kentucky or Florida state sections as weill as the Sports and Animals categories. Citation, Man O'War, Spectacular Bid, Whirlaway are just a few I've had in the past. Might have one or two left, I can check around if you are interested. There are also several in the 1977-79 Sportscaster set, off the top of my head Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Afffirmed/Alydar, Forego come to mind.

Also many old champions can be found on British Tobacco cards.

Thank you for your reply. I have most of the horse related Sportscaster cards. I will check on the postcards. I have seen a few here and there but those may have been cross-categoried into cards. The names you mentioned are the type I am seeking. Also....on a completely different note...I have loved your forum icon photo for a long time! I even think I had a dream about it many many years ago. Thanks again!

That's my beloved Rhea, a whippet. She passed away in 2012 but lives on as my avatar and screen name. A great, great breed, if you are in the market for a dog. Very loyal, people friendly, quiet, and despite their appearance, they are extremely lazy.

Aww, I'm very sorry to hear of her passing. Her spirit is alive and well! I am glad you kept her avatar. :)
