A 1913 Eagle in Remembrance of an Old Acquaintance

Since some others are showing of their Indian $10 gold coins, I figured I would show this one. Years ago, John Wright, who is one of best known members of Early American Coppers club (author of "The Big White (middle date) Cent Book) showed off his collection of "old friends." It consisted of coins that he had bought from dealers and collectors he had met during his collecting lifetime.
I bought this 1913 eagle from Harold Flardy at one of the annual Hackettstown, New Jersey coin club shows in 1978. Harold wrote a Sunday column in the local Morristown, New Jersey newspaper. He was well known in the local clubs and sold coins on the side. He also had some overstrikes made on cents that had images of local historic sites, like Washington’s Headquarters, which is the house where Washington stayed during the Revolutionary War.
This coin was raw when I bought, of course. The only grading service was ANACS Papers in those days. Today it resides in an NGC MS-63 holder.

That is a really nice Indian... I am always impressed with these large, old gold coins... so hard to keep them from dings and dents over the years (105 in this case)....Cheers, RickO

The bold strike and luster really stands out on this one. I have a 1932 MS63 and always liked the design Augustus created for the $10 Indian Head gold eagle.

That is a really nice coin. Great story too. I think that is one of the nicest 63 I have seen. It would probable go 64 according to today standards.

No offense to your gold Indian, but this is the part of the story that resonates with me. I might (not sure) have one of the Washington's HQ overstrikes, but I definitely have a couple similar overstrikes from that era created to help raise funds and awareness for the effort to get the battleship USS New jersey to be located in NJ as a museum after decommissioning. I am sure they were made by the same person.

I bought my first ten Indian in 1978. I didn't have the scoots to buy it outright, so it was a layaway thing.
I remember it was an unc (with PNG papers), but probably not as nice as yours. I got it from Joe Flynn, he was in some Southern or Southwestern state, Kansas perhaps. I remember squirreling it away, and I'm sure I still have it. I'll have to get a look someday.
I've seen and own many too, including the Washington's Headquarters. I always thought they were neat, even though I knew nothing about them.
