EF-40 sharpness, corroded, cleaned, maybe some polishing. I say that the net grade would for value purposes would be around VF-20. All bets are off if it is a rare variety, and since I'm not a New Jersey Cent collector beyond one for type as a piece is history, I can't speak to that. With rare varieties, the grade can take a backseat.
The one I own was made at the Morristown, New Jersey. I lived in Morris Plains, the next town over, many years ago.
I would call it VF, net VG. The shield always comes bold on this variety. There are other varieties that come with no shield lines present, so I wouldn’t recommend grading a New Jersey based on that alone. It is a Maris 67-V. By far the commonest 1788 variety. You should have no problem finding one with pleasing color and surfaces.

I have no idea how to evaluate this little treasure....sure, I could assign a VF details, but not being a collector of these, and certainly not an expert... it would be a guess based on condition as it relates to more common coins. Certainly a real treasure for anyone lucky enough to own it. Cheers, RickO
I happened to come across your coin in an old catalog. It is ex. Pine Tree EAC 1975 sale, lot 408. Nice pedigree. It sold for $350.
