Photobucket drops pricing that angered millions

Photobucket’s experiment with being a $399.99 premium service is over, and so too is the tenure of the CEO who led it.

The Denver-based photo storing service on Thursday revealed it has slashed its prices and restored millions of photos around the internet hoping to mollify millions of customers it angered last year.

“It’s the first step of many to restore the trust of customers,” said Ted Leonard, Photobucket’s new CEO.

I normally don't use Photobucket but in late 2016 I uploaded this picture:

Others who use/used Photobucket can check their old posts to see if their pictures have returned.

I had to sign into my account to access the links. Been a long time since I had actually logged in.
Drag and drop did not work for me, but a copy/paste of the HTML link did the trick.
Glad we have access again - I had a number of photos in albums that I forgot I had.

Here is a crummy photo of my toned Peace dollar. It's a little more vibrant in hand.

You know, since then I've learned to take better photos and how/where to host more effectively (and most forums like this one allow direct uploading now). So, really, have no need for them anymore as my newer photos/nicer photos are not even on their site.

Nice that they are restoring the old links, and the new pricing for allowing third party hosting is reasonable, but now that I know how to not use them there is no reason to go back. It will be interesting to see how many people actually go back. That was a pretty killer blow to jack the price that high and with so little warning (and applying retroactively).

Good luck to the new CEO, but they may have made too many people more resilient and not needing their services...

While I'm happy that many many photos are now restored in this and other forums instead of that stupid "We noticed that you have been using Photobucket for 3rd party hosting" ie - linking from forums, I am not going back either. Between imgur and the direct upload feature here, I'm satisfied. PB caused me a ton of heartache (I am a forum mod on a gaming site with a few million active users, and it hurt there with a few thousand screenshots I had posted over the years).

This is really good news for this forum though. All the old pictures will now work again!

  • StorkStork Posts: 5,207 ✭✭✭✭✭

I remember a lot of people (another site but probably here too) uploaded their photos for backup, and at some point the resolutions were all reduced and their high res shots gone. Yes 'stupid' to not back up elsewhere but when PB made like it WAS the back up and then didn't warn all the borderline Luddites that were using the site how things were changing, well that was just plain bad. Then the dropping of the hosting retroactively, UGH. It may be a completely new crew running the show, but the previous folks probably ruined it. Too many other options out there now and their shenanigans made it so a large chunk of people learned how to work around them. Like Imgur.

Totally agree. Need a cloud and a hard copy! Preferably two hard copies so one can be offsite too. I just felt bad for those people who were too naive enough to understand that and were misled.

Last year's move to a $399/yr service was unforgivable. I put up with their horrible performance when it was free/cheap. But there was no way I'd pay that atrocious fee.

I found alternatives. I'll never go back. I'd be surprised if the company survives after the universal outrage and rebellion.

Yes, almost every time they put up an "enhancement” that was supposed to improve their uploading procedures, it had bugs in it and either won’t work or was hard to work. They would have something running well, and then they would have another half baked “upgrade” that was not properly tested.

That was during the time when their service was free. Now they expect you to pay for that, after they kicked you out of the barn for more than a year.

They need to come back with a re-booted name. Right now, they “slop bucket” as far I’m concerned.

Not returning. Don't know the former CEO's background but it was not in business.....Maybe he/she can get a job in Washington - lots of revolving door openings, I hear.

I was about to post that, but figured it would be too political. A man or women of his or her talants might do well there. It seems to take longer for a bad idea to bite you in the butt if you are working for the government.

It is always to fascinating to watch companies commit suicide. Anyone with 10% of a brain could have told them that plan was idiotic. This move is way, way, way, way, way too late. It takes uncommon talent to alienate your entire customer base in a single decision. The only companies that survive this sort of mess (New Coke, perhaps) are those that recognize their folly and take immediate, corrective action.

When it comes to electronic data, store a digital copy in "the cloud" if you must, but ALWAYS maintain at least two copies (in separate physical locations) that you control directly.

No chance I'll go back. Not even if their site was better, and it isn't. :)

In the private sector you find out pretty quickly if you have a bad idea, because it goes straight to the bottom line of your income statement. In government it has to go through bureaucratic channels, which can take years.

Of course, when a private sector company becomes as big as a government entity, like the old General Motors, it can take years for the dinosaur to realize that someone has driven a sword in its side. When message gets to the brain, it might be too late.

I remember one of my undergraduate economics professors described General Motors in the early 1970s, as “a private socialist economy with a GNP that was slighter larger than that of Poland.”

I wouldn't use photobucket again if they paid me $400 a month.

They ruined several of my threads around the net and they were already so advertisement heavy I wanted something else.

It's getting so that everything is behind a paywall and the software is so poor it might be time to just quit surfing and save the $100 a month to connect.

It took five minutes to type this out.

Which, it turns out, is quite a fine thing afterall :)
