Opinions on this Morgan Dollar please...

Ended tonight on Ebay and I was not the high bidder, but just wanted to get opinions on it. I was attracted to it because of the fairly strong strike(on a date that is notorious for softness) and the subtle toning on the rim. I have just recently come back to interest in coins and wondered how my "eye" for quality is at this point! Please be honest and thanks in advance for any opinions.

That is a Redfield dollar. Luster seems a bit dull though there are few marks. I would guess it would grade 64 today at a major TPG.
Probably want to buy with a little more luster to go with the strike. Had this one been more lustrous, the rim toning would have enhanced the eye appeal.
Since you did not buy the coin, is it bad manners to ask what it sold for? Just curious what some one would pay for the coin presented in that holder.

Unless it says Redfield on those Paramount holders, it's not a Redfield Dollar. I'd say it's a nice MS64.

Actually it's just a Paramount holder. It should not command nearly the premium a "Redfield" would, although it will command a bit of a premium.

EBay's messing with me. I just looked it up on ebay, under SOLD listings, and see it sold for $97.
When I click on it, to look at the auction, even though the auction just ended today, it won't let me actually view THAT listing....kicks me into an active auction saying the other has already ended.
I hope that's just a glitch and not a new ebay change....
Hmmm...it does appear to be a semi-recent ebay change.....when it goes to the active listing (not of the specific coin I wanted to see), I have to then click on the hyperlink "listing", then I have to choose to see the original listing. Used to be, if you looked at sold/completed listings, you could view the auction just by clicking on see original listing.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I noticed this happening to me the other day. I was getting so frustrated, all I wanted to do was to see the original completed listing. But no, instead I get to see some active listing that is supposedly "similar" to the one that is no longer available. The similar listing is not even close to what I was looking at. There is a reason I look at completed listings and then want to see the actual listing. I just love how eBay keeps "improving" things for us. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

So it is not a "Redfield" unless the holder actually says "Redfield". I learn something new nearly every day on this forum.
Does anyone know the period of years when Paramount used that type of holder?

I would say a high 63/low 64....If there is luster (not apparent in the picture) then 64. The holder can be misleading for people who assume Redfield. Cheers, RickO

The 1902-O dollar is one of the treasury hoard coins that came to light in the early 1960s. It was once considered to be a better date, but today it is common. The most famous "fall from grace" in this hoard was the 1903-O dollar. It once made it to $1,500 in Uncircualted in "The Red Book" bfore the Treasury hoard came to light. After the coins were issued, it fell to as low as $15. It has recovered some, but far from all of its glory since then.
The present coin was part of the Redfield Hoard, which Paramount Coin marketed in the 1970s. Most all of the coins were labeled as "MS-65" although almost all of them fall short by today's standards.
The grade on this piece depends upon the luster. If it is somewhat dull and frosty, it might be limited to MS-63. If it is a bit brighter, it could be an MS-64. The dull spot on Ms. Liberty's cheek concerns me. If it is as it appears in the photo, I'd grade the coin MS-63.

I won a few of those Paramount coins last night. (Seller had more than 20 I believe) This one I passed on. 64 is what I grade it. Some of his others are 66 or better. (The ones I bought

I will not stick you with a disagree, but a dip on that coin would not do it any good. If anything it would only get duller, and the small amout of toning around the edge that improves its appearance would be gone.
looks genuine and from what I can see from that picture does not looked cleaned. MS65 probable not but really nice coin indeed. Congrats. At least a 63
