Real or AT, and would it be worth sending in, or throw it in with the junk silver?

Looks like natural album toning with even toning starting from the edge. Nice coin.

In my opinion, AT. Blues and purples generally lead me to an AT designation. Certain purveyors of AT coins have 100's of coins in their inventory with this general color pattern. And, in my opinion, the very fact that you are asking this question in this forum makes me believe you have concerns as well.
Very nice original toning. It has been in an album for a long time. I don't know if it is worth sending in, but definitely worth keeping or selling to a strong collector.

Well, unlike many of the toned coins I post, I know this one did not tone in one of my Danscos over the years, it was bought as-is.
I thought it looked good when I bought it from my wholesale friend in a bulk purchase awhile back, and the price was reasonable enough (let's just say <$20). However, there are a lot more experienced folks on the forum that deal with toned coins and Washington quarters, so I figured I'd see what they thought. I know it does not look like the mint set toning frequently seen on the later quarters (which of course we wouldn't see on a '42 anyway). But that doesn't mean it couldn't tone naturally via some other means. But I also suspect that there are some very good 'tone doctors' about, as you seem to indicate, that could make a coin look pretty good and reasonably natural. I just wonder what the 'tell' would be on this coin, if really AT.
This is a tough one for me.
I mean it's a Washington so I want like it but it looks "bubbly" from 12 to 5 on the obv edge.
I'd also like to see a smoother transition of the toning along the remainder of the edge.
I'm no expert but definitely not junk box worthy.

Then you must not have ever handled original mint sets from the era. Blues and purples are very common generally, although not the shades here as much. I also don't think this is a mint set toner.
I think it is market acceptable, and I could see this coming back in a MS66 holder.
I'm going with album toning as well. The crustiness (if that's a word) looks like it took time to form.
I see this a an absolutely market acceptable toner in a 66/66+ holder, maybe even get a color bump to 67 on the right day.

Those are amazing pictures... and the coin is a great year as well
... as far as the tarnish... Frankly, that could go either way....When determining the authenticity of tarnish, I prefer the A in AT to mean 'Accelerated'... since, well done, it comes from the proper chemicals, just not from long term exposure. If done in a 'hot box' this could be accelerated... I cannot determine either way.. so likely market acceptable. Cheers, RickO
