Valuing an Error Coin

Helping a fellow disposition a few coins. Most coins are reasonable to value...meaning, in holders with a good historical auction record. There is one coin (and I don't have an image yet) that is vexing to value. PCGS graded Bust Dollar @ VF, 15% off center. The area of "off center" has eliminated the date. Any idea of how to value a coin like this or is the only option to bring it to auction and see what the market values the coin? I have asked an error specialists and he has yielded that its a "market call" due to rarity. Anyone have any thoughts or comments? I'll try to get an image. (What bad form....a hard question with no image.)

That's the only one I've ever seen missing the date. Its a 1798 or 99.
Value? I'll wait for the experts to chime in as well.
Probably worth just around or slightly over the 5 figure range.
Might be more if it's an 1804.

It can't be an 1804. It's 1798 or 1799, as @REALGATOR stated.
You can see the top of the 1 and the serif of the 7 in the photo.
Someone with a copy of the reference book could probably identify the die marriage (including the date),
from the position of the top of 1 and 7, plus the star patterns....
The thing about early error coins is that they are frequently worth less than normal coins. This one is probably an exception because the error is so unusual and dramatic. Still as a type collector and a Bust Dollar date collector, this coin would only interest me at what many might consider a "bargain price." It probably would be worth five figures to some error specialists but not to me.

Some detailed detective work could possibly pin down the date... if done conclusively, it would likely be worth a bit more...Perhaps @ErrorsOnCoins will give us some input. Cheers, RickO

No, I would not quote on something that I do not know about.
That is a Fred or Mike type of coin, perhaps Jon.
I specialize in Modern major error coins with extreme eye appeal in higher mint state grades.
It's very difficult indeed.....
