Bought some cheap coins just for the fun of it

I went to look at a house and had an hour and a half to spend before picking up my son from school so I stopped into an antique shop which has several cases of coins.
I spent an hour going through tokens and stuff, most of it completely uninteresting but I did buy six things... an 1959 and 1960 unopened mint set for $18 each, a 1934 Union Pacific Lucky Piece which is basically 64/65, a Golden Gate expo Treasure island piece in 63/64 starting to tone for $4 each (half off the prices noted), a Kansas sterling medal for $2 and a .999 silver Bacchus round with high relief and colorful toning for $15.
All will go into my sons album but a fun and inexpensive time.... now should I open those mint sets?

Unopened mint sets are like Schrodinger's cat.
The mint set is neither dead nor alive...but if there is a radioactive particle lets hope it induces vibrant toning.

IIRC, the P.C. designation on the envelope means proof set.
I buy those UP tokens whenever I see them in Unc. One day...
Both sealed proof sets will sell for more than you paid on eBay. Nice haul. And any time I read "Sterling" and "$2" it sounds like a steal

The Union Pacific tokens are really cool examples of art deco and are very popular with both coin and train guys.

Nice haul... and that reminds me... I have not made the rounds of the Antique shops here in town in quite a while....mostly, the coins are overpriced... but once in a while, there is a surprise. Cheers, RickO

An unusually nice find for an antique store. The New Orleans Mardi Gras silver piece was probably once owned by one of the crewe members. Needless to say, the silver ones weren't used as "throws"!

Boosibri, you're too high end. That's o.k., but don't let on to your boy that the coins are not up to your standards. Tell him they're GREAT! If you do it right, someday he'll be a better collector than you ever were. And he will love you for it. Teach the children.
