1865 2 cent piece.

davids5104davids5104 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭✭

Purchased this coin via auction.... I know nothing about these coins and I am putting it at a VF30/35 based on my guess. My question is about the word "We" The original auction states fully struck "We", Does this coin have typically weakly struck centers? I am going to attempt to complete this small set as I enjoy the history of this era of coins.... thanks for everyones info

That one is struck better than most.

WOW a 2 cent piece thread! (thanks davids)
I actually like the looks of your coin, and yes, I know the surfaces look rough but the detail is there.
"WE" seems to be the weakness on the 2 Cent series for all the dates. You have a fine coin that I hope you didn't have pay to much to own.

There are quite a few varieties among the two cent pieces as well. The 1865s come in Plain 5 and Fancy 5 flavors, and yours is a Fancy. There's not much market differentiation, but it ups the coolness. (The Indian cents also are Plain and Fancy this year.)

Nice coin... the Two Cent coin seems like the red headed step child of coins... for some reason, not much appreciated.... I like them, and I have one (I think maybe two) that managed to survive in my possession since I was a youngster. Cheers, RickO

I saw the fancy vs plain and I thought it was plain. The 5 did not look right to me. The pcgs coinfacts photo was my source

The "5" on the OP coin looks okay to me.

I formed a collection of Two Cent Pieces in the late 1970s when speculators dominated the market and pushed collectors like me out of it. I did a "Red Book set" in EF, except for the 1872, which was a Brown Unc. and the 1873 which I didn't collect at all because of the price. That 1870 Two Center is sole survivor from that set. I sold the rest.

The 1864 Small Motto variety is not as scarce as you might think. They are fairly easy to find, and I even cherrypicked one in "old time" VF (strong "WE") when I was a dealer. An example like this one is scarce, however.

It seems odd to me, but yes, these coins don't draw a lot of collector interest it seems.

I meant to say that the 5 did not appear to me as being the fancy variety. I believe it is the plain variety

    No, it's the fancy "5."

I like 2 centers because of the introduction of "In God We Trust". It almost became the first coin with a former president (George Washington) on it. Here's a photo of a display I did on 2 cent pieces.

I always liked the series. Put together circulation and proof sets some time back in grade 64. Didn’t have a Small Motto Proof however. Got a free trip to Summer Seminar as the exhibits prize at a MSNS Convention.

Not much wear but it probably suffers from light surface corrosion. It looks like it may have spent some time in the ground.

I've always liked the series. I've assembled a set in AU-UNC except for the '73. My '72 is a PR65RB. I also have an 1867 Doubled Die Obverse in XF45.

There is something about the 1865 that bothers me. Nothing definite.

Actually the plain 5 is the much more rare coin, I seem to find the fancy 5 more than the plain 5 much more in the wild.

Seems like you have a nice set koynekwest. Not many collectors with the '67 DDO in such a high grade.

Good luck on obtaining an 1864 SM proof, they are like hen's teeth.

WOW what a unique toned coin! @davids5104 I can see how the war was unfolding then...only if the coin can tell the story :|

This is a nice short series to collect. It's mostly doable, save the 1872 and 1873 which will take some patience and $$$. It seems like 2 cent pieces have their following, but it's nowhere near the bust half crowd.

Yeah, the denticles look weird, not like they should.

Not really. The weak shield is not right for this high a grade unless the coin was bent in at the back and out at the front a bit when new. Also, that dark crust looks applied. However, I really cannot condemn it without seeing it.
