I did seven years, seven months and eleven days in the Navy (but who was counting)? Mostly on a sub, tin cans and a cruiser with a tour of duty in Gitmo just to break the monotony image. Spent the last three years homeported in Italy where my son (Petescorner) was born. Got out as an EM1 in 1969, never looked back image

    I was never honored with the chance to serve. To all who did thank you and God Bless. I went to the recruiter and tried. Unfortunatly, my left eye was damaged when I was a child so the recruiter for the Army told me I could not see well enough to fire a rifle and the US Army would not be interested in me. I replied "Hand me your service revolver and head out across the parking lot" Obviously, he did not take me up on my offer.

    USAF 1955-1971: Went from Airman Basic to Major, then with an un-named U.S. agency. Total active service 19 years 7 months, Covert Intelligence (junior spy - one of the very few) wounded in Vietnam, Decorated, and spit on (in that order), fired by President Ford (didn't want us dealing with "unsavory characters") so no retirement benefits. Wish I could get back in. Called my old outfit to volunteer and they just laughed, and laughed, and laughed.
    U.S. coin collector since 1943. Have tried desperatly to keep every coin that has come to hand, but unfortunately, some got away.

    Active Duty Navy Since 1982 Looking to retire next year, but unsure because I want to go back over to the sand pile and kick some more Iraq butt. Been stationed in Norfolk Va to San Diego Ca to Yokosuka JA to Lakeherst NJ back to Norfolk VA and now at Pax River MD. I still live in Norfolk so I drive the three hour drive each weekend.

    35 years means you were a special sort of guy. Had to enact a special law to keep you around. Thanks for all you've done, and here is a enlisted Hand Salute to you, CHIEF. Pulled a couple HQ assignments myself (HQ AFCC and Airlift Comm Division - don't know what they names they may have evolved into these days)

    I see there aren't too many lifers here, but there are few careerists, and to you I say, hang on in there.

    I was just shy of 16 years and medically retired from the USAF in 1993 as a very proud member of the Top Three (put on my sixth stripe in May of 1989). I still dread the fact that I'm not still in uniform.

    I won the lottery. Two years 1972 - 1974 U.S. Army. Didn't get any further from NY then Ft. Story, Virginia. I got more out of my military service (a high school diploma and some much needed discipline) then I gave.

    A big thank you to all you guys (and gals) for the sacrifices you made for me, my children and my grandchildren.

    Cool thread, and a salute to all of you. USAF 1976 to 1978 43151 OV-10 Bronco Crew Chief, took advantage of Palace Chase and transfered to the OKANG and worked with a comm construction outfit til 1980 and transfered again to the USAF Res as a heavy equipment operator on a rapid runway repair CE squadron. Served 6 years total and was an E5 Staff when I seperated in 1982. I was also a military brat whose father served 6 years in the Army Air Corps and another 23 in the USAF in Communications.

    USAF - Dec 7, 1986 to Nov 30, 1996. Served in communications, security police, and AWACS. Spent time in 4 different countries, travelled another 28. Ended up with a bronze star, two AFCM, two AFAM, three AFGCM - two tours in Turkey, three in Saudi Arabia/Kuwait/Qatar. Served with hundreds of great ladies and gentlemen, some of whom are no longer with us.

    Just pulled off my combat boots and hung the BDU's up in the closet for next drill, out defending Freedom this weekend, ThreatCon Bravo.

    Currently Air Nat'l Guard, past six years, previous 12 years Army Reserve, Nurse Corps, with duty in Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield/Storm in '90/'91 during the Gulf War, with the 410th Evac. Hosp (SMBL); huooah!

    Only brought back two coins, a Saudi one-riyal, and a Brit. Sovereign, 1923.

    I chose to be a citizen/soldier, and am proud and pleased to have served. Dishing out the influenza vaccine doses, and gearing up for the resumption of the anthrax vaccine and smallpox innoculations!

    Every day is a gift.
