How the Slab Sticker was really conceived...

Once upon a time few coin dealers got together for a movie night.

As they sat around in pizza sauce covered chins watching Dumb & Dumber one had a brain fart.

Whoa guys what if we could come up with something that would be like selling a ton of dead headless parakeets to hundreds of thousands of blind kids?

And that boys and girls was how the slab sticker was born.

LOL. Ask Eagle Eye. I think he was the first with that "GREAT" idea.

News flash, in the late 1990's I had self destruct stickers printed with the image of a tiny microscope. I was in the process of starting a "sticker" service that would examine any TPGS coins graded as Mint State. I would only "sticker" the coins that met the "old" Uncirculated standard of "no trace of wear." In hindsight, at $1 a coin + return postage, it probably would not have worked at that time.

LOL. Years later, a better man than I came up with CAC. :)

    Not "immaculate conception?"

RE: "... a ton of dead headless parakeets..."

And it remains just as useful. :)

The head was stapled on... Stickers are less of a liability issue ;)

It was actually conceived by a group of error coin dealers with the stipulation that error coins will never be stickered.

That way we can laugh and watch all the other dealers running around like chickens with their heads cut off chasing beans.

Ah...now I understand....What happens to the "live headless parakeets?" where they in the Dead Parrot Sketch?

    Do u care?

I think a group of dealers (buried in big ticket US numismatic coins) had a really bad show, went to a Florida Strip bar to recover trying come up w strategy get rid of big ticket stuff not selling. Sort of like u can only go to the same well so many times.

A stripper sitting w them said “Dey need sumtn like de sticker on bananas my girl Jazzy goes Kwazy for dem. I bet doz coin collection people got nough money go for dat but make it Gween like dough. Den Dey pay da money like u want. Oh an make like doz scarce too so they scrambling buy from yer biz like dwunk PL (pathetic loser - sc term) guys spending on vip.”

After couple rounds of drinks the sticker idea born. Create something big money buyers will pay thru nose for they all want.....then come up w infrastructure move it.

    The truth:

Realizing that a viable major third, party grading company could not succeed from the marketing perspective, the sticker concept came into being.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
