What do you think of this morgan $?

How would YOU grade it (from the picture)?
No toning, so some may like it while others may not.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

@Bochiman AU58 due to some chatters IMHO and I am not into toned morgan as yet so I like it!
Are you planning to acquire it?

I won't mention any grade, yet, if there is one (ie...if PCGS didn't 'bodybag' it), but it is already mine.

I was going back through Truviews for a different reason, saw a few coins, and felt like sharing them.

Btw....not saying it is/isn't AU, but I did a doubletake reading your post......maybe you meant something else, but "chatter" doesn't AU a coin. Rub does. Wear does. Chatter doesn't.
Chatter WILL lower the MS grade though.

Image is flat. So, my guess is a lower grade. I can see some hits, but I think the flatness hides some. 63+, 64

No apologies needed. Just weren't sure if that was what you meant. Typing doesn't convey much nuance.

Possibly. I've only got a couple of coins which are "not for sale", unless it were a truly insane price. This isn't one of those.
PM me if you are really interested as I didn't mean to make this a FS thread (but I don't mind....just didn't have any intent to pimp it out when I posted it....saw it in a TV when I was grabbing the TV of the dime I showed you earlier).

Nice MS61 imo maybe a 62 from the gradeflators, congrats

Man, that has to be at least a 64 but seems to be lacking the luster needed for a higher grade.

Grading is subjective. What do you see in the image that makes this an MS-61 or MS-62 in your opinion? For example, how many detracting marks do you allow on a coin you grade MS-62?

AFAIK, "Gradeflation" refers to a change in a coin's grade over time as the older standard becomes more liberal. I don't understand what this coin's grade could have been in the past before the "gradeflation" you mention occurred. Do you think it was an AU-55, AU-58, or MS-60?

  • HighReliefHighRelief Posts: 3,685 ✭✭✭✭✭

The hit on the jaw and nose could keep it from a 65 so I am calling it a nice 64.

  • WalkerfanWalkerfan Posts: 9,551 ✭✭✭✭✭

Looks like a 64 to me. I have no issue with the color.

MS66. Only looks flat because it is semi-PL. Very nice.

hard to say from a photo, but if it is as lack luster as the photo shows and with the scar on liberty's jaw I would guess 64/64+.
Still a very clean Morgan. I bet you will have some offers other than the one mentioned.

Assuming that it has some nice luster, which you can't tell from the photo, then I would say 65+ or if it has booming luster then a 66

I would like to call her a 66+, however, it has the over dipped look that others have mentioned. The obverse looks to have less luster than the reverse. Both sides appear to have a semi PL fields. I think PCGS may have been tough on her for the lack of luster and called it a 64. It's a coin that I would buy to put away in my collection in a heartbeat if I came across it in a 64 holder.

  • KkathylKkathyl Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭✭✭

So we see AU55-58 all the way to 65-66. I think the picture is fine but would call the coin a 63 because it does not have anything too distracting but about 5-6 areas with light marks. Since the coin is found commonly in this condition, it does not seem to warrant much more then that. But I could be wrong.

I think its a solid 61, wouldn't be surprised if tpg overgraded it at 62. TPG tend to overgrade, especially Morgan/Peace. Gradeflation keeps em coming back and at the end of the day it's all about the Benjamins

I suck at this but it's fun. The world of the easily entertained . . .

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

I'm trying to get you more up to speed (see my offer to you on your "board") by asking questions. You don't need to answer but if you do, your answers may be helpful to others.

    1. What should an MS-61 or MS-62 Morgan dollar look like?

    2. You have made some strong accusations about TPGS and the folks who work at them. What do you base your opinion on? How many coins have you sent to be graded in the last four months?

  • CascadeChrisCascadeChris Posts: 2,526 ✭✭✭✭✭

Without seeing it in hand I'd say nice shot at 67 in terms of pmd & strike. Could lower my estimate in hand though depending on luster and any light scuffs being hidden by the TV

    The more you VAM..

I'll take all of your personally graded MS-62 and above Morgan Dollars, sight unseen... I just have no idea nor will anyone else have an idea of how you arrived at MS-61.

The image just has a flat appearance, no pop! Are you referring to hits? Tip of nose. Check/neck line. Off the chin, etc.

If th coin is not AU then it was not graded for some sort of manipulation on the cheek. Looks nearly pitted.
