A disturbing trend......a recent pick-up

I don't really collect these, (or do I) but for the last year or two I can't resist a Seated Half when it has this circulated look. I posted 'disturbing trend' because i have too much that I'm already collecting, i dont need another new direction! It's very hard to resist, being a slightly better date and a CW year. The two light scratches on the obverse are highlighted by the lighting.
Comments welcome or post a mid-grade circulated Seated Half if you'd like.

Very nice old half.. and I understand your fascination... I have the same affliction, however, I manage to restrain myself... otherwise I would be living on the streets of L.A. - Well, not L.A., I hate California... but I would be flat broke if I gave in to those urges. Cheers, RickO

I like it too, Old, well circulated coin like this that don't have series defects are scarcer than some people think they are.

Unfortunately there might be some PVC on the area of Ms. Liberty's are that holding the staff. Since the piece is certified, that does pose a bit of a delima.

I can't help but grab a good 1853 arrows and rays 25c or 50c with that look.

It looks like it is in a 2X2 cardboard staple holder so it would be easy to remove it and give it a soak and rinse in acetone to remove any PVC.

Nice half but like so many it's had a cleaning in the past and might not grade. The obverse has been wiped but the reverse appears not to have suffered the same fate.

    good luck,

It is a raw coin. I haven't yet, but she does have a date with a Q tip and some acetone to get rid of any pvc or lingering crud.

Nice half, here is one I have...... BTW, rolling a QTip across the surface of a coin can cause hairlines, so possibly just soaking in acetone may do it. Crud is okay, shows the 'originality' of a coin.

I never realized that liberty has the same hat on a seated half that she has on in the Morgan dollar.

It's called a liberty cap. In ancient Rome slaves were not allowed wear caps. When a slave earned his freedom he was given a cap to wear to celebrate his freedom. The cap became the symbol of liberty.
