You know, I just revisited the entry photograph and all I see are a bunch of silly old buffers wearing captain's hats straight out of a low-budget, corny B-movie or cheap souvenir shop.

I have been around the sailing/boating community for five and a half decades and can count, on one hand, the number of times I have ever seen that hat on anyone.

This picture does not lend any appearance of credibility to coin collecting being enjoyed by young people.

Just an observation.

The percentage of little girls that came into the shop vs. little boys was probably 1 to 15 or 20. So anytime a little girl came in, she got extra attention. I always hoped that they would all stick to it !

During the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in Italy in 1944 a favorite souvenir was a coin partially encased or embedded in lava. Any chance PF can hook me up with a coin embedded in Hawaiian lava?

Maybe show and hobby "powerhouses" should take the suggestion made in an earlier post and visit one of the Women in Numismatics meetings? There, they can ask the women who are active business members about the situation.

Not to open a new can of worms, but how is the racial or ethnic mix at coin shows? I have only been to a few so my experience is quite limited. I am curious if anyone has any theories or recommendations on that subject.

In SF Bay Area shows the racial/ethnic mix at coin shows is mixed. Many white males, but there are numerous persons of varied racial/ethnic backgrounds at these shows. A cross section of the general population.

In my experiences mainland it's like this:

90- 95% white males
5-10% split between all females & other races of males

And of the white males, 75% are 55 or older. 15% of those have a mustard stain on their shirt.

Thx everyone for the show reports. Aside from some diversity on the west coast and beyond, I guess it is as I might have expected. I wonder what can be done about that.

Maybe we can start by alleviating the crankiness and getting the slobs to either stop using mustard or start wearing a bib.

The past several years I have noticed an increase in the number of women at shows.
It may help if the horny old geezers would drop their obvious ogling down a notch or six.
,(I am referring to the lecherous dealers. I am sure we all know a few.)

I've been to about 20 coin shows in the New England area in less than a year and it looks like the numbers in this area are similar to what Mark posted. I have the white males at closer to 90%. 10% split between females, other races and Young Numismatists.

You're just not looking hard enough. The only major show I attend is Long Beach. There's plenty of hotties there. O.k., some of them might be PCGS "Ringers" that are brought in just for eye candy. Who cares? If that's the case, I consider it a public service. If that's what it takes to get the customer's juices flowing and the wallets opening up, then hey, great marketing move! Works for me.
