Very cool. What's up with the light scratches on the steel cent? Can you see those with the naked eye?
Yeah those are die polish lines. Its nearly PL
Nice. I couldn't tell that they were raised from the picture.
Can you zoom in closer to really get the detail on the die polish lines? I wonder what it would look like at a slight angle to show how they are raised. I am lucky I don't have a set up like you do. I would be taking pictures all night long.
The reverse has em also

That steely is bad ass
I tried a couple angled shots but the slab makes it tough and its harder to get light on the coin with the camera too close. I am thinking of getting a microscope that will both let me shoot microscopic euglenas et cetera and also coins at the metallurgical level. Bit pricey with the canon mounts but ill probably pick one up this year.
Nice shots. I like the video monitor too!
@ACop
What a professional set up. How often do you use the studio?
Nicely done. Lighting and exposure spot on.
Not often enough. Its my other hobby but work doesnt end I dont get in there much. That's the drums section you see in the back drop.
Cool, have fun !!!
Very nice set up...are those Bongo drums in the background? And why do you want to shoot euglenas? They are cute....
Cheers, RickO
Yeah bongos. I had to share the cam setup with my music studio.
Six cents in money; $700,000.00 in camera equipment.
Nice coins and nice pictures. You never fail to deliver!!!
Nice pics!

Great setup and your images are popping. Very well done
Thanks. The lighting needs some work. That's the hardest part.
Cool set up and great images...

Love the M.C. Escher ceiling !
PS: Do your bongos diffuse light better than the short keyboard?
Very nice!
A Major update has occurred. Solved at least a half dozen problems presented by the previous setup.
Very impressive! You are now fully equipped to moonlight....
Good work!

Lighting still off a bit

Nice pics
Wow... Nice '38 Buff... and great picture. Since I am not an expert, I have no critique to offer. That picture looks like I could pick it up right off my computer screen. Cheers, RickO
@ACop
Are the light arms part of the copy stand or are they 'add ons' purchased separately? The reason I ask is I am looking for some new lighting and these look like they work well for you.
See http://www.doubledimes.com for a free online reference for US twenty-cent pieces
The answer is sort of yes to both. They came together from amazon but they sell just the arms too. They clamp on and can be removed. I am not a big fan of this copy stand though. Very flimsy, expected a bit more for $200. The one I had previously for about the same price was better. But cant remember the brand.
Ah ... I understand. By chance are the light arms made by Albinar? They sell 'stand alone' light arms that are fairly inexpensive.

The entire kit is made by albinar. My advice would be to get the lighting arms and lamps from them. They are fine and should clamp on to any other base. But get a better base and stand. Very flimsy. My camera and lens are less than half of max load spec but if you turn the dial to lower the position, the camera weight makes it slide down for a few extra inches.
Great ... thanks.

Having one side wall light and the other dark makes light and color balancing more difficult.
Your photography area should have the same neutral white or gray walls all around. This give you a stable light reflection from the walls and permits you to concentrate on direct light position and angle.
Easy fix there, I can center the stand and with this fancy new wifi camera control the laptop comes off the desk. Do you think different wall colors could have different effects on different coin types? Like would black walls help bring out PL fields?
The color is spot on too. That's what a Steelie should look like.

This guy's going to take over the coin imaging world. I'm VERY impressed with your photo skills.
Haha...it's mostly the camera and the lens. I havent even finished reading Goodman's book yet. My main reason for even taking up the hobby is to help with my poor eye sight limitations in enjoying the coins.
I appreciate the compliment, but I think the pic pros would be offended by any comparison, and rightfully so.
All light reflected off the walls will affect both intensity and color. For optimum accuracy and control, you want all of the walls - even your shirt - to be plain white or neutral gray.
(PS: White means no UV brightener, either. This can create a blue cast in shadows that is not visible until your make photos.)
Great pictures!

Nice set up! BTW who is "MAJOR UPDATE"?
Thank you for sharing......I have a 70D , camera stand and the L Series Canon 100 Macro. Although I haven’t had the chance to take a picture of a coin with this stupid yet I’m eager too. Just haven’t had the time.
I wonder if diffusing the light a little may help. I also read once where a guy made a light box. I have a closet that I will use for shooting pics.
Someday I’m going to find the time to shoot at least one coin.
Good luck with your photography. That 80D is a nice camera.
Speaking of diffused lighting.............................for coin photography,
I came across these pics a while back on a public forum and have tried contacting the photographer to no avail, I hope he does not mind me posting them here for the benefit of other numismatic photogs.
