1873-CC Trade Dollar in MS64 just sold at HA

I was watching this one and it just ended over $38k. Now that the auction has ended, I wanted to ask if anyone was able to see this coin in hand. To me, it doesn't look like an MS64, the picture shows what appears to be a spot removal in a very central location on the obverse. My eye is immediately drawn to it. Was it much better than the pictures show? Thanks to anyone who got to see it and can comment.
(Yes, it's a scarce variety and likely the 'finest' graded example of that variety, but I hope the buyer wasn't banking on that aspect)

I too agree that something seems to have be performed on that example.
Toning is not natural in my opinion, from those pics at least. If it looks like it was painted on, it probably was. No toning pullback on either side.....On the other hand, sure has a lot of detail which it should.

That IMHO is not very attractive and the first thing I see is that gigantic spot.
Perhaps the new buyer is going to conserve the coin and give it a fresh look.
Not distracted by any singular spot but overall the coin is too dark for me and the toning is unattractive.

I saw the coin. If I liked it I would have bought it. It was extremely dark and blotchy. Hard to tell if the grade was right. I think $38G Hammer was very strong for it. I bought the NGC MS64 from a Heritage sale earlier this year for over $50,000.00-and it was one of the finest I ever saw (TDN now owns it).
Thanks for the report. $38k is a lot of lettuce for an unattractive coin.
My eye goes directly to that spot on the reverse the second I look at it. Not a fan of it, but someone probably wanted some big registry points... maybe its better in hand. If the new owner is happy, that is all that matters.

I don't really care for toning that looks like camo obscuring the design. And the bright spot on the obv is too distracting for me as well.
The more 65 common dates that I see, the more I’m convinced that the one Laura bought for me is a gem
The 64 sold at FUN this year was an exceptional coin. I would say second finest known (after the 1st Legend 73-cc). The FUN coin went for much higher money the first time at auction (10+ years ago) as the original buyer believed that it was a 65 (or close to 65). This coin (great die rarity) just had too inconsistent toning. If the toning was more even (I like originally toned coins), it would be a great coin.

I hate to make the buyer of this coin feel badly, but it's not for me.
I've owned an NGC AG3 and an NGC AU 50, and I liked them both more......
I must admit, I have not seen this coin in hand.
That spot is very strange... and becomes even more strange under magnification.... I would say this coin was purchased strictly for how scarce they are. Cheers, RickO

I see it as UNC details tooled/spot removed and then AT. The toning most likely got worse after the coin was holdered in the 2005ish NGC gen which IMHO is some of the weakest grading in the TPG business save for some of the last little white Anacs holders before the switched and went down hill. It sold also in 2009 for 29k.
Even if I am wrong, what grade would it cross at PCGS? Would it cross? Even at MS62 Cac that is a 30k bath. That coin is no PCGS62 Cac
One of the clearest examples of a tomb I have seen at non-elite levels of the hobby. The only play here is to reholder at NGC and sit.
I am a buyer at 3800$ in a PCGS UNC details holder for the incredibly rare die pair.
