Frankly, let other countries do whatever they want. American currency has a special place in the world and of course in our country as well.
No, we need to watermark our currency so blind people can read it. It also makes counterfeiting the currency more difficult.
Whaaaat? Most of our currency does have watermarks. And I am not sure how that helps blind people. Maybe I am missing something.
I have seen some skillful counterfeits of US and foreign currency with pretty convincing watermarks that use white ink (or the color of the paper) to mimic the watermark, either by printing the watermark design in white, or printing a background in white, minus the lighter watermarked design. When the bill is held up to the light, the white/neutral ink reduces the light that passes through so as to create a watermark effect.
Not to say banknotes should not be watermarked, but it is not an absolute deterrent to counterfeiting.
Canadian notes have a metallic strip presumably to help the blind tell the value of the note, as well as to make the notes more difficult to counterfeit.

“Harriet Tubman” $20 Note Postponed Until 2028 By Hubert Walker - May 22, 2019
Mnuchin’s announcement was during a hearing of the House Financial Services Committee:
“The primary reason we have looked at redesigning the currency is for counterfeiting issues,” Mnuchin said. “Based upon this, the $20 bill will now not come out until 2028. The $10 bill and the $50 bill will come out with new features beforehand.”

The irony.
By 2028, either
1) Currency will be obsolete due to a) electronic (Apple pay type stuff) payments
2) Currency will be banned due to Big Brother monitoring all transactions, so no cash.
3) $20 will be worth 2 cents due to runaway inflation due to all the "programs" put in place after the next few elections
4) The world ends, thanks to A .() .Sea
2028? Nine years until a woman is on the front of our currency? Very disappointing. Also disappointing that they will pander to the Andrew Jackson lobby and put him on the back. Trail of Tears continues.

Well, there's a minor correction about Jackson --- it's the back of Jackson's horse that will be on the bill, not Jackson's lovely face....or maybe I misread the press release?

Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross, c. January 29, 1822 – March 10, 1913) was an American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved people, family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.
I kind of like this one:
Here’s more:
In 1849, Tubman escaped to Philadelphia, then immediately returned to Maryland to rescue her family. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives with her out of the state, and eventually guided dozens of other slaves to freedom. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Tubman (or "Moses", as she was called) "never lost a passenger". After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she helped guide fugitives farther north into British North America, and helped newly freed slaves find work. Tubman met the abolitionist John Brown in 1858, and helped him plan and recruit supporters for the raid on Harpers Ferry.
When the Civil War began, Tubman worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. The first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, she guided the raid at Combahee Ferry, which liberated more than 700 slaves. After the war, she retired to the family home on property she had purchased in 1859 in Auburn, New York, where she cared for her aging parents. She was active in the women's suffrage movement until illness overtook her and she had to be admitted to a home for elderly African Americans that she had helped to establish years earlier. After she died in 1913, she became an icon of courage and freedom.
Many Americans will feel that Ms. Tubman has three strikes against her---she was a Republican, she was a devout Christian, and she was staunchly pro-gun ownership. She preached that newly freed slaves should own guns and become proficient in their use to insure that they remain free. As a conservative, I really like Ms. Tubman.

There are undoubtedly few photos of Harriet Tubman, and back in the old days of photography the stern look was in. I'll bet they could purty her up a bit if necessary. In any case, good looks have never been a prerequisite for depiction on a banknote. For example, we are accustomed to Old Abe, but he is is not exactly a looker.
