Should we be surprised to see so many gold dollars coming out of San Francisco?

Lots of P-mint coins. From the condition range, looks like they circulated - someplace.

100 pages of these things or almost 2,500 pieces.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

The short answer is no. I have read that the gold dollar was a popular coin in the 1850's because it's value was obvious as opposed to the bank notes that were only as good as the bank that issued them.

If you were traveling far from home to a place like California, taking gold Dollars with you made a lot of sense. You could use them for smaller purchases. Also there was a law on the books in California that outlawed paper money. That would have had it's effect on what you took with you also.

A $1 bank note would have been worthless or close to it in California during the gold rush.

Maybe someone will do a date/condition distribution table on these. Then they can be compared to a sampling done by the Philadelphia Mint.

I am guessing these gold dollars will also be 5 figure coins.

The appear to be entirely ordinary except for where they were found. To me, that does not justify a price in excess of any other similar gold dollar.

I hope some of these are a lot better priced... but I doubt they will be.

Pinch of gold dust, there's an article somewhere about how much that is.

I think it said that it was supposed to be 40 pinches to the ounce.

Yes, they will be promoted, but I have that experienced collectors will ignore the games.

This is why we couldn't get anything else graded all winter?
