1861-O Seated Half newp - Thoughts?

I’m on the fence about this one, any thoughts on whether it should go in my Dansko typeset ?

In a Wayte Raymond style holder it might mute the scratches a little in a few years....Probably worth AU money, just do your research.

    A perfect Dansco coin!

Do the images magnify the "problems"? If it looks better in-hand then go for it, otherwise I'd pass.

At first I thought the scratch was on the reverse above the eagles wing, and The line between the 6 & 1 was a die crack, but Once in hand it’s definitely the scratch PCGS noted

I am still looking for the scratch or scratches that caused it not to get a grade. Could it (they) be in the right obverse field, by Ms. Liberty's mouth, through the date or by the eagle's right wing? Maybe it's all of them put together. The base grade is AU, but there is some light cleaning invovled too.

Like everything, it has to do with the price. It's not a bad looking coin, but this is a common date and mintmark combination, believe it or not. It does make for an interesting album coin with a special date and Civil War history.

@BillJones the deepest scratch is through the date. (I saw it in person) There are a few others, but they are minor.

A scratch through the date is a problem because that's a place that few people are going to miss.

It's better in an album than in that holder, but you can probably find a better album coin.

    NO!!!

The rule of thumb is to drop the grade one level for pricing. In this case I'd be drawn to dropping it two grades. The Gray Sheet says $250 for EF and $140 for VF. Add to that 10 to 20 percent for a retail mark-up. This coin's value is closer to VF than EF, and most collectors would take nice, original surface VF over this piece, if they had the choice.
