1909S VDB

Is there a way to track what the prices would have been back around 1970?

Just curious as that is when I was introduced to coin collecting. And even then if I remember right it was the holy grail.

There were probably some price guides from back then, maybe search around the internet for “1970 rare coin price guides.” But it’ll be hard to find. Good luck!

Always buying nice toned coins! Searching for a low grade 1873 Arrows DDO Dime and 1842-O Small Date Quarter.

If I'm remembering right, you could buy a nice VF type coin for around $125.

Not sure about higher grades such as AU or BU.

    $109.50 in VF.

To myself as a young numismatist it was already out of reach.

Neat old coin price guide.... I was about to move to Barbados at that time....Three suitcases, a sense of adventure and all my worldly cash in my wallet. Lots of fun... :D Cheers, RickO

In 1969 $10,000 a year was a good wage or salary. Now it is a low poverty income.

Back then the coin I really wanted was an 1877 Indian Cent in Fine. That met one with a full "LIBERTY." I bought one for $200, and that was after it had come down from $230 to $240.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'd agree that 09s VDB is "part of the holy grail". For "whatever reason", I have it in my mind that 6 coins make up a 20th century US "holy grail set". For me, it's a 1909s vdb Lincoln cent, 1937d 3 leg Buffalo nickel, 1916d Mercury dime. 1932d Washington quarter, 1921s Walking Liberty half and of course the 1934s Peace dollar. Makes for an expensive set for just 6 coins if all in high grades.

You have to throw in the 1914-D Cent in there somewhere, IMHOP. (at least in my list).
