My question: Why is it raw? It would sell for more on Ebay if it was certified. The existence of this thread perfectly illustrates what happens when you're not selling a certified key date on Ebay.
Looks suspicious to me.
I wouldn't touch it without certification.
I agree on all fronts with what you are saying. I am curious what folks think may have been going on with the coin from someone working on it to planchet issues. I am certain the coin is genuine based on diagnostics. If by some chance this issues are mint made, the seller got hosed on his selling price.
.
looks like a standard struck-through grease to me.
for the series & year, it sure seems like a really strong example.
.
That reverse seems too strong for that date and the color seems questionable.

Why is this coin not certified? No thanks.
The "N" in ONE looks correct. Too many other red flags to interest me.
Why this..why that.. makes no difference to me... it's not a certified key date coin...I would pass it by.
The color is a little suspect.
There's all kinds of weird going on there. Besides the "struck through", isn't that a second shield to the left and south of the actual shield on the reverse?
Have to check Ali Babba to see if I can get it cheaper.
Looks OK. It is struck though debris. Not original though.
The color has been "enhanced." I have seen this many times on certified key and semi-key date Indian cents. The color is often the "red-brown" hedge.
The "grease struck-though" thing really disturbs me. Shouldn’t there be more 1877 Indian Cents around If this occurred on a run of these coins? I’ve not seen other 1877 cents with the obverse pattern we see here. I’m guessing genuine, but there may more here than might be meeting the eye. I think that someone has fooled with this coin quite a bit.
Somebody is playing games and I'll pass. 2500 & up has to be certified. I'll bet this would be rejected.

Good point, Bill. I don't understand why anyone would want to fool with an 1877 Cent. Color, yes, but what benefit would there be for continuing the tomfoolery? The coin is what it is, and rare enough already.
Stupidity, I guess.

I agree with EE
38 bids, sold for $2275.00.
How much is membership here worth? Probably in this case $2275.00.
I would bet one of the coin arbitrage experts on this forum pounced on it........
Will the lucky party please step forward and collect our accumulative praise.
OINK
Anyone notice that on the reverse there appears to be a bird sitting on the bow?
It seems someone has purchased a problem..... and paid dearly for the privilege.
Cheers, RickO
Looks like a Far Side bird.
I just sold one on ebay that was PCGS unc details. I think you could get more with it in a genuine holder (not the amount he is asking though)
Rick, I agree on the reverse, but are you saying that about the obverse too? I've seen several though out the years (obviously not nearly as many as you) with the voids on the obverse like that and I assumed it was damage to the dies from so many clashes. I can't see the photo well enough to see clashes on the obverse, but I see them on the reverse.
