I'm guessing sample slab, or mechanical error.

These are put into selective boxes every so often to make sure the QC guys are not sleeping on the job. NOT!

Seems there are just too many of them from a single generation to be a mechanical error.

    How many have you seen?

Practice slabs for new equipment operators?

(Of course, you could seal slabs WITHOUT coins, and get the same practice.....)

I was one of the underbidders on that series of listings. Earlier this year I bought one for $60, but never received it, lost at the Kansas City USPS sorting center.

Yep...looks like early sample slabs... Though I have seen many sample slabs, I have not seen one's with blank labels before. Cheers, RickO

My guess is they are samples of some sort.

Several showed up about 2 years ago IIRC. Sold then for strong prices.

I was bidding on those up to 40 each. Kinda neat but wouldn't have paid more than 30 (kinda got away with bids). I do hope, though, that whoever won them are happy with their purchases.

The market and interest in samples keeps going up. Good thing bad thing, depends if buying or selling.

Gives me hope for listing my 1964d sample in a 1964 slab.

Have seen 20-30 or so. Hard to know how many could be repeats since there aren't serial numbers.

Nothing written on the label in UV ink.
It's the one piece post rattler generation.

I'm with the majority here. Some kind of sample. Strange.

Since they are encapsulating common dates, and there are numerous examples, it seems to follow that they were purposefully manufactured.

Cross linking the threads: https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/997442/the-official-pcgs-blank-label-slab-census (since I can't keep them straight).

In David Schwager's book, this is ** PCGS-001-3-1** (page 307-308)

    He indicates known as of publication (2016): 1959, 1959-D, 1960, 1960-D, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964-D, 1967, 1968-D, 1974

This slab is not exactly a sample, novelty, promotional or any other type of holder covered in this book. It is a mystery, and I include it because it is of interest to collectors of unusual slabs. The design matches other generation 3 PCGS green label holders but the front of the label is completely blank. An eBay seller known as Kryptonite Comics sold 14 of these at two to three week intervals from June through December 2014. Prices ranged from $255 for the first slab to $45.55 for the last, with an average of about $110. The seller said that he did not know their origin.

When I took one to the PCGS booth at a show, the customer service rep looked at me like I was trying to hand her a dead fish and refused to touch it, saying it could be counterfeit. At a later show, PCGS had a Meet the Expert event where anyone could ask David Hall a question. On seeing the holder, he simply said, “No idea,” and returned it to me.

I showed the slab to many collectors, including two former PCGS employees. They had several guesses, including a prototype, a sample given to customers for evaluation, a holder made while testing, repairing, or otherwise working with the sealing machine, a holder made while training the machine operator, or a training tool for graders. Because all contain worthless coins, the slabs do not appear to be errors. The real answer, however, is that I do not know what this is.

He valued these at $150 which turns out to be close to the recent sales.

David is aware of the most recent sales.

    I'd say it's an "error slab" ;)

  • BStrauss3BStrauss3 Posts: 3,667 ✭✭✭✭✭

Now if anyone bought one in 2014 and has the eBay auction # we can use listingshistory.com to look it up, figure out the keywords and search for the rest.
